Roadracing World’s original post follows:
Steve Bodak, an instructor at Colin Edwards’ Texas Tornado Boot Camp and the owner of the contruction company that actually built the facility to Edwards’ plan, is hospitalized and in a coma as the result of being hit by a car while training on a road bicycle Wednesday, August 3rd. He is 44 years old.
Bodak and his family live in Willis, Texas, where the accident happened, and operate Bodak Construction.
Earlier today, racer Cory West posted a tribute on Facebook:
“I’ve been struggling to comment about what has happened to our good friend Steve Bodak,” wrote West, “but I feel like I have to post something…
“Bodak was one of the nicest human beings I’d ever met,” West continued. “When I first came to the Texas Tornado Boot Camp, I didn’t know him at all but he was very happy to meet me and went out of his way to make me feel comfortable. We clicked right away because of our love for bicycles, and of course motorcycles. As the years went on and I frequented the camp more and more, he was one of the guys that I always saw first when I arrived. He’d always greet me with a big smile and the bro hug… Bodak was good at everything he tried. An excellent rider, a super fit athlete, a skilled tradesman, awesome father, ping pong killer, and Crud’s ‘Ruthless Assassin’! He was always so quiet but was full of confidence and love for his friends and family. He had so much patience for young and new riders that he was the perfect teacher for any newcomer.
“I never really saw him drink much,” West added, “but one camp I got lucky enough to sit in the shop and drink with him hours into the night. I figured if he was drinking, someone needed to sit there and listen to what he had on his mind. Nothing bad of course, he just felt like drinking and reliving some of the old days. I’m so fortunate to have had that night to learn more about him… The last camp I was at and the last time I saw Bodak, he kept letting me wear his steel shoe that he just had made, and was tickled pink every time I’d give it back to him. ‘Maybe one day I’ll be able to use that thing like you do’ he said..”
