On October 1 Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) announced that it was planning to hold an IndyCar race May 10, 2014, on its 2.6-mile infield road course. But the course the IndyCar Series will use and the course the MotoGP World Championship will use August 8-10, 2014, will be slightly different from each other, and both courses will be different than what exists at IMS now. The IndyCar race will run clockwise, like Formula One did when it raced at IMS several years ago, and use a series of turns and a chicane at the north end of the track that MotoGP will not use. MotoGP will continue to run counter-clockwise and will use revised versions of Turns Two, Three, Four, Seven, 15 and 16, said IMS Communications Manager Paul Kelly in an exclusive telephone interview with Roadracingworld.com. Turns Two, Three and Four will be “noticeably different,” according to Kelly, resulting in a better flow. Turn Seven, part of the esses leading onto the back straightaway, will be opened up to create better flow, greater speed on the back straightaway and a larger braking zone for Turn 10, which could lead to more passing. Finally, Turns 15 and 16, the relatively slow and tight right-left final combination that leads onto the front straightaway, will also be opened up to create better flow. The length of the infield road course the MotoGP riders will use will go from 2.621 miles to 2.645 miles. Every part of both course configurations, car and motorcycle, will be completely repaved. Kelly said the redesigning of the infield road course was done in close collaboration with FIM and Dorna officials, including Dorna MotoGP Safety Advisor (and three-time former World Champion) Loris Capirossi. IMS officials worked with series organizer Dorna Sports and worldwide governing body FIM to create a 16-turn, 2.645-mile circuit featuring exciting new turn configurations and braking zones, creating more passing opportunities. The entire infield section of the circuit will be repaved, creating a more uniform, smooth racing surface. On-track action will continue in a counter-clockwise direction for motorcycles at IMS. Dorna Sports and the FIM issued a provisional 2014 schedule Oct. 2. The Red Bull Indianapolis GP is one of 19 races next season. The 2014 season starts March 23 at Qatar and ends Nov. 9 at Valencia, Spain. The Red Bull Indianapolis GP is the 10th event on the scheduled, preceded by the Grand Prix of the Germany on July 13 and followed by the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic on Aug. 17.
