New York Safety Track (NYST) is a 2.1-mile, 18-turn, omni-directional racetrack currently under development on the site of the still-functional Mountain Top Airport between the cities of Harpersfield and Davenport in New York, approximately 50 miles west of Albany. “This whole project was designed by and built by enthusiasts,” NYST Track Manager Greg Lubinitsky told Roadracingworld.com. “I was riding with Team Pro-Motion for the past 10 years. My father rode with Team Pro-Motion for the last 15 years. They [track riding enthusiasts and Team Pro-Motion members] were the group that started this entire idea of building a track that’s safe and a track that’s for the enthusiasts, for racers, for everyone to love.” Lubinitsky said the 137-acre property was purchased at the end of October 2011, construction plans and business proposals were quickly passed by the Town of Harpersfield and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), and construction began at the beginning of June. “We started nine weeks ago with the property completely covered in trees, nothing being done at all,” Lubinitsky said, “and as of [August 10] we have finished all base preparations. So we have about three weeks left in the entire construction process and then we resume [operations] in April.” Lubinitsky said the track was designed by the same group of enthusiasts who form the track’s ownership group, New York Safety Track, LLC, but in spite of their lack of track-building experience the construction process has gone very smoothly. The process got boost when shale was discovered on the property and used as the material for the track’s base, saving money and time. “We didn’t have to get any off-site material,” said Lubinitsky. “For our base preparation the shale is phenomenal. Now we need to compact that [shale], put down another four-inch layer of some finer crushed rock, and then in three weeks the first layer of pavement comes down.” When finished, the track will have a 40-foot-wide, 2300-foot-long front straight that will double as the private airport’s new runaway (replacing the previous grass runway). The track will be 36-feet wide throughout the rest of the course, with run-off areas that average 90-feet and soft barriers purchased by the track placed in some areas “just in case,” said Lubinitsky. If all continues going to plan, New York Safety Track is scheduled to officially open in May 2013, and the first event will be a Team Pro-Motion event. Whether or not the track hosts sanctioned racing or four-wheel events remains to be seen, according to Lubinitsky.
