The Penguin Racing School held its inaugural New England Sport Bike Club (NESBC) races on Sunday June 5th at Cannan Fair Speedway in Canaan, New Hampshire. NESBC was formed to expose track day riders to the excitement of competition in a friendly sportsman environment. Racers are classified in three general categories; Street Bike, Novice or Licensed Racer. Street Bike and Novice riders can compete on any track day machine, and the licensed racers are limited to either Motard or Formula 300 machines. The Motard and Formula 300 races are purse paying classes that are designed to demonstrate “real” racing for the other participants.
Rainy skies made for a wet track all day long, but the newly paved Cannan Fair Speedway proved to have excellent traction due to a special polymer used in the paving process. The stars of the event came from the Garmin Street Bike Two class, where front-runners Nick Peterson and Troy Hodgkins swapped the lead back and forth multiple times during the eight- lap event. The pace that the two riders we setting had a the crowd of observers on the edge of their seats as Troy Hodgkins displayed a shocking degree of skill as he visibly pushed his dot tires in the wet. On the penultimate lap the race looked to be over when Nick has an off track excursion while trying to overtake Troy on the outside into the TurnEight chicane. However, Troy never saw the issue and on the second to last corner coming around for the checkered flag he ran off the track himself – handing the win back to Nick. Both riders celebrated with much laughter after the race!
