On Thursday at Honda’s Twin Ring Motegi, Marc Marquez said that with four more races left, he was in no rush to secure a fifth MotoGP title. He then talked up rival Andrea Dovizioso’s chances, saying the hard-acceleration, hard-braking track layout favored Ducati.
But come Sunday, the defending World Champion’s intentions were clear. An electric start and incessant pressure on leader Dovizioso took its toll: Dovizioso’s crash on the penultimate lap clinched Marquez’s fifth premier class title, and his seventh World Championship in nine years.
“What he did was really special,” admitted Dovizioso, referencing Marquez’s Sunday performance. But the same could be said for Marquez’s 2018, a season where he made it look so easy…
