Westby Racing has re-signed South African Mathew Scholtz to race in the 2019 MotoAmerica Superbike Championship, and Scholtz may be riding factory-backed Aprilia RSV4 Superbikes.

“Yes, we just got the [contract] back from South Africa,” Westby Racing Team Owner Tryg Westby told Roadracingworld.com Tuesday. “So he’s riding for us next year. He’s all signed up. It’s a new contract. It’s pretty much like last year, only a little more generous.”

Westby said his team may continue to run its existing Yamaha YZF-R1 with upgraded Magneti-Marelli electronics in 2019, but with its Yamalube title sponsorship going away, Westby Racing is also free to pursue other options. One of those options is running factory-backed Aprilias, which is a strong possibility, according to Westby Racing Team Manager Chuck Giacchetto.

“Yeah, we’re actively talking to them [Aprilia] and hoping to have a plan or agreement,” said Giacchetto. “We’re waiting for a final proposal. Stay tuned.”

Giacchetto said he hoped that any deal with Aprilia would be a multi-year agreement.

Scholtz, meanwhile, tested his Yamalube/Westby Racing Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike with some new electronics settings Monday, October 29 at VIRginia International Raceway.
