Zero SR Electric Motorcycle: Zero Emissions, Not Zero Fun

     “The protocol for exiting Turn Five at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on a noise-restricted day is not conducive to setting personal best lap times. After the apex of the uphill left-hander, the drill is to upshift once — if not twice — swing back from the right edge of the track all the way to the left, and roll out of the throttle. This reduces engine noise to a minimum, but kills your drive up the hill toward Turn Six.

     “It took me a couple of laps to get used to the new protocol for riding this Zero electric machine. There were no gears, so upshifting wasn’t an option. There was no internal combustion engine making noise, so the throttle could stay pinned. And the only reason I swung back to the left side of the track was to set a good example. The grid marshal had asked me to please continue following the recommended procedure, saying, ‘I know you don’t have to on this bike, but if other people see you not following the rules, they won’t…”
