Fernández, Pons, Rueda and Muñoz hit the target at MotorLand Aragón

Raúl Fernández (Angel Nieto Team) won the Moto3™ race in the fifth round of the FIM CEV Repsol held on Sunday at MotorLand. Edgard Pons (AGR Team) won both races in the Moto2™ European Championship and José Antonio Rueda (Talent Team Estrella Galicia 0,0) and David Muñoz (Jerez Andalucía Motor Talent) shared the victories in the European Talent Cup.

Raúl Fernández left MotorLand Aragón having consolidated his leadership of the Moto3™ Junior World Championship. The Angel Nieto Team rider not only won the race but also took advantage of Manuel Pagliani’s (Leopard Junior) fall when he was hit by another rider to increase his advantage to 28 points over Pagliani at the head of the Moto3™ classification.

As soon as the lights went out, Raúl Fernández pulled clear along with Sergio García (Junior Team Estrella Galicia 0,0) in the early laps, followed by Jeremy Alcoba (Junior Team Estrella Galicia 0,0), Barry Baltus (Reale Avintia Academy77), Makar Yurchenko (Max Racing Team) and Ai Oura (Asia Talent Team), among others. Barry Baltus crashed out and Makar Yurchenko was unable to avoid him and also went down. With five laps to go, Raúl Fernández, Jeremy Alcoba, Sergio García, Celestino Vietti (SKY Junior Team VR46 Riders Academy), Ai Ogura and Can Oncu (Red Bull KTM Ajo) made up the leading group battling for the honours.

Finally Raúl Fernández won by only 6 thousandths of a second ahead of Jeremy Alcoba, while Can Oncu achieved his first podium in Moto3™. Ai Ogura and Celestino Vietti finished fourth and fifth respectively just two thousandths off the podium. Raúl Fernández won the Repsol free fuel cheque.

Edgar Pons collected his first win of the season in the Moto2™ ECh after going solo in the opening laps. The AGR Team rider crossed the line more than two seconds ahead of Jesko Raffin (Swiss Innovative Investors Junior) while Héctor Garzó (Team Wimu CNS) finished third more than 11 seconds behind the winner to secure his first podium of the season. Alessandro Zetti (Fau55 Racing) was the best classified in Superstock 600. Edgar Pons received the Repsol free fuel cheque.

The second Moto2™ race was interrupted by a red flag after Dimas Ekky (Astra Honda Racing Team) crashed in the opening laps. The race was then restarted, having been shortened to 10 laps, and was identical to the first race: Edgar Pons won alone and was accompanied on the podium by Jesko Raffin and Héctor Garzó. Roman Fischer (Pinamoto RS) won the Superstock 600 while Edgar Pons received the Repsol free fuel cheque.

Jesko Raffin continues as clear leader of the Moto2™ ECh with 52 points over Edgar Pons in third slot; second classified is Augusto Fernández, who has moved to the World Championship and no longer competes in the FIM CEV Repsol.

In the first ETC race, José Antonio Rueda took his first victory after winning a group race with a thrilling finish. In fact, Víctor Rodríguez (Laglisse Academy) crossed the line first but had a three-tenths of a second penalty imposed for a dangerous action on José Antonio Rueda, and ended up in fourth. Xavier Artigas (Team Impala) returned to the podium with David Salvador (Cuna de Campeones) third. Despite having led on the final lap Carlos Torrecillas (Punto Moto Team) was left out of the honours when an error at the start of the final straight caused him to fall back to fifth. The Repsol free fuel cheque went to race winner José Antonio Rueda.

David Muñoz won the second race of the ETC and gained his first victory in a race which was stopped with only one lap to go because of a fall. Víctor Rodríguez and his team mate Daniel Muñoz (Jerez Andalusia Motor Talent) accompanied him on the podium after starring in a thrilling race that led to Carlos Torrecillas leading before crashing out when he had already pulled clear. David Muñoz took the Repsol free fuel cheque. Matteo Patacca (SIC 58 Squadra Corse), who did not race in MotorLand due to injury, continues to lead the ETC but is now tied on 82 points with Xavier Artigas while Víctor Rodríguez is third with 78 points.

Next round of the FIM CEV Repsol will be held in Jerez on 30th September.

More, from a press release issued by AGR Team:

DOUBLE WIN FOR EDGAR PONS AT MOTORLAND!

The Catalan dominated both Moto2 races with authority and gets closer to the second place overall.

The Spanish rider of the Argiñano & Ginés Racing Team in Moto2, Edgar Pons, started today determined to win the two races of the FIM CEV Repsol at the Motorland Circuit. And he did it. In the first one, Pons crossed the finish line with an advantage of more than 2 second; in the second, they were only 6 tenths in a race that was cut down with an accident that spilt oil on the track on the second lap. It was another day with searing heat, specially during the second race and also with pressure in the garage, as Pons complained about the clutch after the warm-up and the team changed it in record time. Between the first and second races, the setup was also changed to improve the grip of the Kalex.

Edgar recovered his winning ways. After his time in the World Championship, his last win was in 2015. In the Moto2 overall standings, also because some of his rivals did not compete in this round, Edgar is close to the second place, thanks to his first two wins of the year. Attacking Raffin’s lead will not be easy, but for now there are 100 points still up for grabs and it is not the moment to give in. This result also gives Edgar and the team a lot of morale and they do not discard participating in the next World Championship round in this same circuit.

We want to also talk about the absence of our American Moto2 rider Benny Solis due to an injury, and we wish him a speedy recovery.

In Moto3, Josito García was only in the race for 5 laps. He touched with another rider and they both crashed. The rider returns home in a different mood than other times, as his overall performance this weekend shows that he has made some progress, also thanks to KTM’s support.

Moto2 #57 EdgarPons –Kalex / 1st/1st: “It was a very positive weekend. We have been working for many weekends with the team, improving our set up and in Motorland we were able to find the good one for the brake points and the fast corners. From the first day, the feeling was very good. I’m very happy. The first race went very well and I was able to build my advantage in the first laps. In the second race I also did a good start, taking advantage of the good grip of the tyres and earning half a second. Although there was a red flag, but I repeated the good start and it was a hard-fought race, as I couldn’t get such a good advantage. I’m very happy with the team’s work, we have a good base setup and I’m looking forward to get to the next race and continue this way. Thanks again to the AGR family!”.

Moto3 #20 Josito García García –KTM / DNF: “I had a good warm up and I had a good pace for the race. I felt comfortable and started well from 20th, overtaking some riders and going up to 13th. There I touched with another rider and we both crashed. We knew we were suffering with the heat, but truth is that the KTM has a good setup. In the end, it was the crash that marked the result, but I think we took a step forward. At Jerez, we need to qualify better and I’m sure we’ll stand out. This weekend we saw that we can be in better position. Thanks to the team”.
