Karl Smolenski claimed the Woodcraft Technologies’ Varsity Challenge Scholarship for the Rochester Institute of Technology in an 8 lap race at New Jersey Motorsports Park on Saturday.
Smolenski, an Isle of Man veteran and AHRMA member since 1991, was rider for the highest placing collegiate team in this 5th annual running of the Varsity Challenge. The team finished 3rd overall behind the Zeros of Brian Larrabure and Arthur Kowitz.
Since its inception, Woodcraft Technologies has sponsored a $1000 scholarship that helps advance the efforts of engineering students in universities in the US and Canada.
The RIT ebike is powered by a 125 volt brushless AC motor fitted into a Kawasaki 636 chassis. The student team designed and built the electronic controls and systems that kept the bike running under full power for the duration of the race.
AHRMA’s eMotoRacing class is America’ longest running zero emissions motorsports series with 10 rounds at major race tracks around the US.
