FMRRA 2018 Championship makes their first stop at Homestead Miami Speedway

Florida Motorcycle Road Racing Association’s 2018 championship headed to the southern reaches of Florida to Homestead Miami Speedway for the final race before the championship Round.

Condensed to a one-day schedule for Homestead, Round 7 kicked off with a quick round of practice followed immediately by qualifying. Grids were posted promptly after each round, and without a break the Grande Corsa races kicked off in the morning.

In the first race of the day series stalwart Christina Miranda started on the pole leading the 12 lap SuperStock 600 Grande Corsa. Brad Gordon had an incredible start and leapt up front for the beginning of lap one. Miranda was able to make it past Gordon before crossing the loop in lap one and held the position for the rest of the race. Miranda, Gordon, and Daryan Martin completed the race podium for the Expert class, while Adrian Mitchell took home the gold for the amateurs followed by Frank Custureri and William Wend.

In the Lightweights Grande Corsa race there was great racing across the mixed field of SuperStreet 250/300 and Moto 3 mounts. Ultimately, youngster Fabian Alvarez crossed the line only .383 seconds ahead of Walter Ferreya. The two took the top step on the podium in their respective classes while Hurricane Racing teammates Alejandro Rei and Jonathan Pellnitz completed the Moto3 Expert Podium. Keeping the theme, Bikepass Motorsports Teammates German Vacca and Daniel Ossa finished shortly behind Ferreya in the SS300 class.

The SuperStock 1000 Grande Corsa race saw MPH Racing teammates Alex Irzyk topple Shannon Andrus in the Expert category, while the Amateur podium was another MPH Racing sweep with Todd Wagner, Derik Johnson, and Mikey Hannon rounding out the awards. Irzyk took the overall victory by a narrow .020 second gap over the current Overall Amateur Champion Todd Wagner, displaying his outstanding performance.

The Sunoco SuperBike 600 Grande Corsa race again featured Christian Miranda in his continuing dominance of the 600 classes taking the overall victory followed by veteran Bob Damerau and former FMRRA Amateur overall champion Daryan Martin. Dustin Richards of Hurricane Racing took the win in the amateur class, starting the tone for his podium repeats throughout the day. Richards was joined on the podium by Adrian Mitchell and Mikey Hannon of MPH Racing.

The Twin Grande Corsa race started in the rain with a light shower. Jonathan Pellnitz took advantage and showed his skill in the wet, laying down a large gap and taking the overall win over Roger Morisette and Donald Dufresne in the Production Twin Class. Brandon Gindlespeger pushed through the weather to take the Formula Twin win, followed by Mark Tenn.

The $1000 purse Sunoco SuperBike 1000 Grande Corsa brought out the Cuban missile Max Angles and Miami veteran Barrett Long who took first and second respectively. Sean Dwyer finished behind the racers who crossed the line only .465 seconds apart. Todd Wagner lead the podium in the Amateur class joined by Derik Johnson and Mikey Hannon for another MPH Racing photo opportunity in victory lane.

In the first of the afternoon’s sprint races, Dustin Richards hoped onto a Ducati for the first time and took home the Euro Max (and overall) victory in the Euro Cup. Gabriel Figueroa and Ricardo Sune followed in the Max class, while Jonathan Pellnitz won the Euro Light class. Brandon Gindlespeger and Carl Cohen joined Pellnitz rounded out the Euro Light podium.

The lightweight Sprint had a similar end to the morning’s Grande Corsa race and saw Fabian Alvarez take the Moto 3 victory followed this time by Alejandro Rei and Jonathan Pellnitz. Walter Ferreya proved his dominance in the SuperStreet 300 Expert class followed by German Vacca and Chase Mollak. In the amateur division, young guns Alexis Olivera and Jack Caraballo led Yvette LaMar across the finish line in the Moto3 class. Dustin Richards took another victory home in the SS300 class followed by Michael Norman Jr and Justin Thorpe.

The normally tight SuperStock 1000 class, saw Sean Dwyer literally run away from the field with a dominating overall victory. Todd Wagner was the next across the line winning the amateur division, followed by Alex Irzyk and Shannon Andrus (who rounded out the Expert podium with Dwyer). Emil Saldana and Adrian Mitchell joined Wagner in victory lane taking second and third respectively.

The Formula40 – 600 Sprint had an amazing battle at the front. It was hotly contested, but in the end Brad Gordon pulled out ahead and led Alejandro Rei and Bob Damerau across the checkered line at Homestead Miami Speedway. Maykel Perez, Andrea Diotallevi and Mel Ford took home the hardware in the amateur class.

German Vacca led his BikePass Motorsports teammates Juan Zuluaga and William Wend across the finish line in the Bridgestone Cup 600 sprint. Shannon Andrus took the 1000 class victory over Daniel Ossa and Derik Johnson preventing a BPM full sweep of the Bridgestone Tire spec podiums.

Brandon Gindlesperger took a well-deserved overall Formula Twins Victory in the Sprint, followed by Carl Cohen and Jonathan Pellnitz in Production Twins. Cohen was quick to point out in the post-race interview he got his revenge on Pellnitz in the dry after his loss earlier in the rain.

The SuperStock 600 Sprint saw some incredible racing between Christian Miranda and Brad Gordon at the front. Gordon had the lead in the first two laps, but Miranda made a move in lap three and pulled it home in the end. Alejandro Rei finished out the Expert Podium. Jose Lloreda, Frank Custureri and Dustin Richards took home the amateur podium.

After a short break, a similar group of riders came back out for the Sunoco SuperBike 600 class. Christian Miranda repeated his victory in the Expert Class followed this time by Daryan Martin. Jose Lloreda won the amateur division, this time followed by Dustin Richards in second and Custureri in third.

In the final race of the day, the Sunoco SuperBike 1000 Sprint, Sean Dwyer took home the victory and bragging rights with an overwhelming victory. He was joined on the podium by Experts Alex Irzyk and Shannon Andrus. Amatuer Todd Wagner lead Emil Saldana and Gabriel Figueroa across the line bringing a close to the days racing in Miami.
