MotoBros Wins CMRA Ultra-Lightweight 8-Hour Endurance Race At NOLA

MotoBros Works Their Way to the Top of the Box in 8-Hour Endurance

MotoBros won the overall spot aboard their Yamaha YZF-R3 in the opening round of the CMRA Ultra-Lightweight Endurance series this past Saturday, March 10, 2018, at NOLA Motorsports Park.

With the sun shining and the rain threat at bay, the morning races came to an end and the endurance teams lined up their bikes and put the final touches together to start the 8 hour endurance. At 10:20 the green flag dropped and the racers were off. Each turning laps and working their way through the pack trying to find their rhythm. As the first hour wound down MotoBros found themselves in sixth position trailing behind 212 Decals, Deez Nuts Racing, Heavy Lightweights, MonkeyMotoAGVSPORT LW, and waiting for data… with the first place team, waiting for data…, running 4 seconds faster. After getting the signal that his stint was running down Cory Burleson put his head down and ran a 2:02.601 to take the fastest lap on the team to give the next rider a goal to beat. Halfway into the second hour the team pulled in for a fuel stop and switched riders. Isaiah Burleson went out and turned some amazing lap times trying to beat his dad’s time. He raced for the next hour and thirty minutes and was out coming in for their second pit stop when the third hour of the race came to a close and he had worked them up to third place trailing just behind Your Pace or Mine? trying to close them in. When he pulled in they were just ahead in first. After a quick fuel stop Craig Thomson went out to turn as many laps as he could and keep their lead. Unfortunately, when the fourth hour came to an end MonkeyMotoAGVSPORT LW had gotten around MotoBros and took over the lead. During his stint the race was red flagged for a quick crash clean up. Thomson took the restart and regained the position of first and got his personal best time of 2:03.764. Thomson pulled in and filled up the tank to send Alan Phillips out. He got off to a slow start but then turned into a bullet and turned a faster lap than fellow teammate Cory Burleson with a time of 2:02.572. He continued to push but at the five hour mark they were still behind MonkeyMoto AGVSPORT LW and had time to make up. Phillips got back around MonkeyMotoAGVSPORT LW and pulled in to send Cory back out who had a goal to catch. He beat Phillips’ time with a 2:02.484 taking the overall fastest time for the team. When the 6th hour was over they were first overall but MonkeyMotoAGVSPORT LW was right on their tail. C. Burleson continued to fly and maintained the lead until he was pulled in for the final pit stop. The team sent Isaiah out to finish off the race and he was on a mission. He set out to keep the lead and attempt to beat Cory and Alan’s times. Isaiah managed to keep the lead and get a personal best time, second best for the team, of a 2:02.539 just beating Phillips. MotoBros pulled out the lead with MonkeyMoto AGVSPORT LW 2 laps down in second and Your Pace or Mine? rounding out the top three in third just 4 laps down. MonkeyMoto AGVSPORT LW turned the fastest lap of the race with a 2:00.023 and Your Pace or Mine? had the second fastest time at a 2:01.450. Lots of good clean racing and a lot of great action.

A new tire was introduced in the paddock this weekend. The Continental tire has been brought back to the United States and nothing but good things were said this weekend. The tire is super grippy and the wear was great! The Atomic Fire Badger team rode them and only had to use one set of tires for the entire 8 hours of endurance racing! Newton Dominates CMRA Round 2

NOLA Motorsports Park would host the CMRA’s 2nd round of competition for their 2018 championship season this past weekend, and Jay Newton aboard the MonkeyMoto/AGVSPORT AMERICA machines would have another near perfect weekend. With a half day practice on Friday, Ultra Lightweight sprints and 8 hour team endurance on Saturday, and big bike sprints on Sunday, Newton had his fill of seat time.

Jay was strong on the two machines he rode in the Friday half track day, and put in excellent lap times on the R3, and the ZX-6R (636). He would wait until Saturday morning to get reacquainted with the Ninja 250 though. Newton posted the second fastest lap time of all riders that day, and the fastest of all Ultra Lightweight riders. He was looking forward to the sprints and endurance races, even with the high probability of rain looming for Sunday.

On Saturday for the small bike sprints, Jay would take the wins with ease in the E Superstock and E Superbike classes aboard the MonkeyMoto/AGVSPORT AMERICA Ninja 250, even though the Superbike class was an unexpected wet race thanks to the unpredictable NOLA weather. Unfortunately, the rain came too quick prior to the Ultra Lighweight GP race, and Newton had to go out on DOT’s. The R3 is also the team endurance bike, and Newton knew he could not risk pushing the way he wanted, because that bike had to be ready for the 8 hour endurance race that was to follow. He settled for P2 in this class.

Jay would take the first stint of the 8 hour event, and start out on the Pirelli DOT’s. He was able to maintain P2 for the team in the wet, and as a dry line developed, his lap times dropped and he rode the team to within seconds of P1. Team mates Cody Mecklenburg and Joseph Guerra would put in solid stints as well and help maintain the team in P2. Newton would take the last stint on a dry track, and was catching P1 by 3 seconds per lap, but a mechanical would force a quick pit stop. He would remount the Yamaha R3, and with only about 5 minutes left on the clock and dimming skies with cooling track temperatures, Jay would set the fastest lap of the entire race by over 1.4 seconds, and the MonkeyMoto/AGVSPORT AMERICA team would solidify themselves in P2 overall for the day.

Sunday morning would bring cloudy skies, but no rain early. Newton set out for practice and C Superbike qualifying, and ran fast lap after fast lap, in both sessions. He would easily take pole for the C Superbike race and would have pole for every other race as well, due to his wins in the previous round. Jay would have a dry races for his first two, and would take the wins in B Superstock and C Superstock aboard the ZX-6R (636). The C Superbike race would be a very wet race as a massive storm would deluge the track and put a hold on the racing action for the better part of the early afternoon. With Pirelli wets mounted up, Newton would make quick work of the field, and take P1 at the checkers. His last race would be the trickiest of all. The track had dried, but puddles persisted in some sections making it a racer’s choice for tires. Newton chose the Pirelli DOT’s, and it was the right choice. He would go on to win the B Superbike race by a margin of over 26 seconds.

With the weekend complete, Jay would take home plenty of hardware and valuable points for his 2018 #1 plate campaign. A total of 6 wins and a 2nd, would certainly help his cause. The next round for the MonkeyMoto/AGVSPORT AMERICA rider will be at Cresson, Texas, at Motorsport Ranch the weekend of April 6th. Wish Jay luck as he departs for Florida as well. Jay will be racing the Amercian Flat Track Singles class at Daytona TT in Daytona Beach, Florida, on March 15th, 2018.
