“My lack of recent small-bike experience at Sonoma meant it took me a couple of laps to adapt my style to the Ninja 400. The biggest challenge I faced was talking myself into running past every brake marker I’ve ever used while tucked in on the gas. Take Turn Six, for example. On a Superbike I’m usually off the gas and on the brakes well before the crest of the hill on the entry. By contrast, I was flat-out in fifth gear coming up over the rise on the Ninja 400. What a difference subtracting 120 horsepower makes!
