Jayson Uribe, a top star in the AFM regional series and a
top-10-finishing privateer in the MotoAmerica Superbike Championship, was
injured in a crash he suffered during round four of the AFM Championship series
July 27 at Thunderhill Raceway Park.

Uribe was riding his Honda CBR1000RR during qualifying for
Formula Pacific, AFM’s premier class, when he lost traction and subsequently suffered
a third-gear highside crash exiting Turn Two.

“I saw on my pit board P2 and +0.3,” Uribe told Roadracingworld.com.
“I thought, ‘I can do that.’ I decided to go for a quicker lap time. I think
what ended up happening was I power slid a little bit coming out of Turn Two
and it slid just enough to get the engine case to slide on the ground. And then
as soon as the case touched the ground it picked up the bike like it had a
third pivot point and spun the bike all the way around and spit me off.”

And as if spitting him off at over 100 mph wasn’t bad
enough, Uribe’s motorcycle wasn’t finished with him.

“I was looking backwards at the track,” said Uribe, “and
pretty much the bike hit me in the face. I never lost consciousness. My head’s
fine. My Arai helmet did a great job.”

Uribe, however, was transported from the racetrack via
medivac helicopter to Enloe Medical Center, in Chico, California, where he underwent
surgery to repair damage to his left arm.

“I have lost two more bones from my elbow,” said Uribe. “One
ground away to nothing and one got ejected out of my body in the crash. And I
tore my triceps [muscle] off of my elbow. So I got my triceps re-attached to my
elbow, and we’re good to go.”

Uribe expected to be released from the hospital Monday, but
he isn’t sure exactly when he will return to racing action.

“I’m trying my best to heal up as quickly as I can,” said
Uribe. “I want to ride in the MotoAmerica round at Sonoma, but right now all of
the [sponsor] contracts I have are for AFM. So my priority is to make sure I do
that and see where it goes from there.”
