DiBrino Rebounds Taking Formula Ultra Wins and Closes In on the OMRRA Championship Lead at Portland International Raceway

Racers and fans alike were greeted by a sublime Pacific Northwest summer weekend at Portland International Raceway. The weather was a perfect mix of sunny skies to heat the tarmac for optimal grip and breezes on the right side of warm to generate savage power from each machine. The fourth round of the OMRRA season kicked off the second half with championship points chases heating up as the number of opportunities winds down. The actions was fierce from the first green to the last checkers with a new leader emerging in the vintage championship chase while the overall and clubman points leaders saw their leads shrink significantly.

In the APEX Formula Ultra Championship, current leader, Chris Ancien, suffered Friday practice woes and would have to shed his Yamaha for a borrowed BMW for the weekend. While Ancien was put into ‘points-accumulation’ mode to salvage his weekend, Andy DiBrino surged back to the top putting his back-up bike woes from the previous round behind him. DiBrino came thundering back to the front with his EDR Performance-powered Yamaha R1 leading the way. The battles were fierce with challenges coming from the ever-fast Jeremy Coffey. The young gun would hold the lead but was unable to retain it with DiBrino on the gas. Coffey wasn’t the only rider in the mix. Ryan Sutton of Camano Island was fresh off of setting the track record with WMRRA at The Ridge and returned to PIR to challenge DiBrino. Coffey and Sutton kept DiBrino honest, pushing him from behind but it was DiBrino first to the checkers in both contests. Sutton would score a second and third with Coffey scoring a second in the Saturday contest but would DNF in a turn 1 incident Sunday. Kevin Pinkstaff had to pull out an all-time personal best to stay with the leaders. Kevin’s persistence paid off with the final step of the podium on Sunday.

The star of the show was DiBrino. His near flawless execution while re-acquainting himself with his Yamaha on Saturday was remarkable. In Sunday’s contest, he put Ancien on notice closing the championship lead down to ten points with two rounds to go. As the second half of the season begins, now each of our protagonists, Ancien and DiBrino, have suffered a weekend on back-up machinery. With only two rounds remaining, the overall number one is up for grabs and it appears young Mr. DiBrino is surging to snatch the plate. Stay tuned to the penultimate round to see how the next chapter in the APEX Formula Ultra saga plays out!

APEX Formula Ultra Championship Standings – Round 4 of 6:

1: Christopher Ancien – 137 pts

2: Andy DiBrino – 127 pts

3: Kevin Pinkstaff – 93 pts

4: Jeremy Coffey – 85 pts

5: Ryan Sutton – 52 pts

In the Clubman Championship, which sees competitors from a variety of classes in a points race based on the best of two classes, Nobi Iso, took home two wins and a second aboard his Yamaha YZF- R3 in Lightweight Supersport and UltraLightweight Superbike. Iso also had podium finishes on a 125cc GP bike. Despite impressive wins, Iso’s best of two classes lead was cut into by Oliver Jervis. While they don’t compete head-to-head, Jervis won both his races and cut Iso’s championship lead by six, from 18 to 12 points. On the heels of Jervis, OMRRA’s Vice President, Matt O’Rourke, continues to rack up consistent finishes with wins aboard his air-cooled Ducati in Middleweight Classic Superbike and podium finishes in the hotly contested lightweight divisions. Current #1c champion, Adam Faussett, recorded three second place finishes to stay in the mix. Josh McKay won 600 Classic Superbike and took second in 450 Superbike to stay within striking distance of the leaders. With points dependent on the number of entries, the difference at the top could come down to who shows. The math gets more complicated as OMRRA heads into the latter part of the season. Stay tuned…

Clubman Championship Standings – Round 4 of 6:

1: Nobi Iso – 171 pts

2: Oliver Jervis – 159 pts

3: Matt O’Rourke – 157 pts

4: Josh McKay – 134 pts

5: Adam Faussett – 128 pts

In the Langlitz Leathers Vintage Championship, two-time champion, Mica Grohn, took over the lead in the championship chase by grabbing the greatest number of points available in Vintage Middleweight and Vintage Lightweight over the four races. Grohn crossed the stripe first in one contest and captured the runner-up spot three times. Grohn’s six and a half point deficit converted into a five and a half point lead with Dean Willoughby reaching third in only three of the four races. Willoughby will have to regroup for the final two rounds if he wants seize the top vintage plate. Ryan Shanahan, the “Sunday Spoiler”, known for stacking up wins on Sunday’s, suffered an untimely DNF, diminishing his hopes of a championship run on a part-time basis. Making Ryan’s run all the more difficult, Daric Cheshire of Cheshire Motorsports, showed increased pace astride his Honda CB160RR. With wins and podium results in all races, Cheshire has the bit between his teeth and is making a run for the top! Is Daric the dark horse spoiler Ryan seeks to be? The chase is on! Stay tuned…

Langlitz Leathers Vintage Championship Standings – Round 4 of 6:

1: Mica Grohn – 77.5 pts

2: Dean Willoughby – 72.0 pts

3: Ryan Shanahan – 51.5 pts

4: Daric Cheshire – 50.0 pts

5: Andy Hudock – 21.5 pts
