Californian Cameron Beaubier earned provisional pole position during Motul Superbike/Bazzaz Superstock 1000 qualifying Friday at the Suzuki ECSTAR Championship at Road Atlanta, Round Two of the MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Road Racing Series.
Riding his Dunlop-shod Monster Energy/Yamalube Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike, two-time and defending MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Beaubier lapped the 2.5-mile road course in 1:25.575 to lead the field of 21 riders.
Beaubier’s teammate Josh Hayes ranked second-best with the 1:25.786 he recorded in Friday’s opening Qualifying Practice session.
Toni Elias, the winner of both Superbike races last week at Circuit of The Americas, was third-fastest Friday with a time of 1:25.845 on his new Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000.
Elias’ teammate Roger Hayden wasn’t far behind with a lap at 1:25.927.
Armed with a new Superbike-spec engine in his Excelsus Solutions/KWR Yamaha YZF-R1, Kyle Wyman stopped the clocks at 1:26.527 to be fifth Friday afternoon.
Frenchman Sylvain Barrier was impressive on his first day ever riding at Road Atlanta, provisionally qualifying sixth with a 1:26.572 on his Scheibe Racing BMW S1000RR Superbike.
Seventh overall and first among Superstock 1000 entries was Bobby Fong, the double race winner at COTA, with a 1:26.622 on his Quicksilver Latus Motors Kawasaki ZX-10R.
Hometown hero Josh Herrin’s 1:26.697 on his Wheels In Motion/HelmetSounds.com/Western Services/Meen Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike was eighth-fastest overall.
South African Mathew Scholtz did a 1:26.737 on his Yamalube/Westby Racing Yamaha YZF-R1, which was ninth overall and second in the Superstock 1000 class.
Three-time Daytona 200 winner Danny Eslick was third-quickest in Superstock 1000 and 10th overall with a 1:27.003 on his TOBC Racing Yamaha YZF-R1.
Jake Gagne persevered through another challenging day sorting out his Broaster Genuine Chicken Honda CBR1000RR SP2 and did a 1:27.013, which put him 11th overall.
Earning the 12th and final spot in the sole Superpole qualifying session with a time of 1:27.091 was Jake Lewis, who rode a M4 ECSTAR Suzuki GSX-R1000.
The remainder of the field who turned lap times within 107% of Beaubier’s 1:25.575 (which unofficially equates to a lap of 1:31.565 or faster) will be placed on the grid for each of this weekend’s Superbike/Superstock 1000 races according to the combined results from Qualifying Practices One and Two.
The 15-minute Superbike/Superstock 1000 Superpole session is scheduled to take place 11:30 – 11:45 a.m. local time Saturday.
Superbike/Superstock 1000 Race One is scheduled to happen at 3:30 p.m. local time Saturday.
