A Lawyer Weighs In On Hotels Canceling Valid Reservations So They Can Resell Rooms At Higher Rates

FIRST PERSON/OPINION:

I would have thought that this shabby practice of cancelling a reservation to rebook at a higher price would have stopped by now.

I had the same thing happen at one of the big motorcycle events at Laguna Seca a couple of years after the 2005 action. I showed up at my hotel in Carmel to check in and was told that “gee…you cancelled, but we can give you another room” (albeit at a much higher rate). I reminded them of the California AG’s action previously and miraculously my room reappeared.

Sadly, this practice is common to many big events. Time for a call to the track tell them how it is costing them attendees and to the Texas Attorney Generals Office (and/or local consumer agencies) as well as the hotel main offices.

Thank you for keeping this shady business practice in the bright light.
