CVMA CELEBRATES HALLOWEEN WITH CREEPY FAST RACING!

October 29-30, Andrew Lee sweeps the field during his first race weekend at Chuckwalla, Caroline Olsen lowers the Femmewalla class record again.

There’s no fall foliage in the desert, but with tarantulas, scorpions, and plenty of other native creepy crawlies marching around at night it doesn’t take much to get into the Halloween spirit. Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association certainly did during Round 2 of its 2016-17 Winter Series, hosting some scary fast road racing and one hell of a Halloween party.

In his first weekend racing at Chuckwalla, 17-year-old Andrew Lee of Clovis, CA, established himself as a demon of a rider by snagging four wins on his Yamaha YZF-R6. Lee made a clean sweep of the Supersport Middleweight race both days and also won Saturday’s Formula Middleweight race and Sunday’s Shootout race.

In Saturday’s Attack Performance – Formula Middleweight sprint Kory Cowan on his YZF-R6 skirmished with Caroline Olsen on her borrowed Honda CBR600RR in the opening laps, then settled into second place and was breathing down Andrew Lee’s neck. Cowan wasn’t able to find a way past and finished just 0.1 second behind Lee, while Olsen finished in third.

Lee’s success continued into Sunday morning’s no-holds-barred, all-bikes-eligible 10-lap race The Shootout – presented by TrackDaz and SoCal Trackdays. CVMA number-1 plate holder Dale Kieffer got the holeshot but crashed his Racers Edge Performance Suzuki GSX-R1000 midway through the first lap, handing the lead to young Andrew Lee. Lee led for the remainder of the race, crossing the finish line a comfortable 7 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Rennie Scaysbrook on a Cycle News Kawasaki ZX-10R who in turn had stretched out a sizable gap over third-place finisher Caroline Olsen on her Team H35 Honda CBR600RR.

Lee’s winning streak ended in Sunday’s Attack Performance – Formula Middleweight race when he was forced to retire early due to a worn clutch. Kory Cowan assumed the lead on his YZF-R6 and rode a lonely race to the checkered flag. Caroline Olsen took second on her CBR600RR and Andrew Artola came in third on his Yamaha YZF-R6.

Caroline Olsen, visiting from Norway, tasted victory in the Femmewalla class, where she not only won but set a new class record of 1:50.931 for the clockwise direction. After winning the class (and setting the counter-clockwise class record) at Round 1, Caro is understandably on cloud nine. “I have so much fun racing CVMA! It’s such a great atmosphere and great level of riding,” says Caro. “I have to thank Jason Pridmore for his coaching and Benny Solis Sr. for giving me a great and competitive bike to train with. Also a huge thanks to Mickey and Aimee Grana for creating such a great series.” Olsen is currently leading the CVMA Overall and the Shootout class points and in several other classes and hopes to fly in from Norway for Round 3. In Overall points Olsen has 272 to second-place Jon Glaefke’s 214 and in Shootout points Olsen has 36 to Scaysbrook’s 31. CVMA Shootout points are used to determine each season’s #1-#5 plate holders and CVMA Overall points are used to determine each season’s #6-#10 plate holders. CVMA’s season runs in the months when the desert weather is best, from September to the following April.

Marcus DiMichele celebrated his 40th birthday at Chuckwalla with a handful of podium finishes on his Yamaha FZ-07R, (and a face full of cake) including a narrow victory over FZ-07R-mounted Jon Glaefke in Formula 2. Rafael DaSilva took third in that race on a Zero FXGP electric bike, marking the first time an e-bike has finished in the top three at a CVMA event. With the top-speed advantage of an AP Moto-Arts FZ-07R DaSilva won the Formula Twins races on both Saturday and Sunday.

CVMA’s own Dustin Coyner continued his winning streak in Formula 40 on his TrackDaz Yamaha YZF-R1, finishing ahead of David Purcell in second on a Kawasaki ZX-10R and Brian Evans in third on another YZF-R1 on both days.

In the small-bike classes, it was an all-weekend battle between Sergio “Zeke” Rodriguez II, Gray Pham, and Gabriel Hernandez III. In Saturday’s Ultra Lightweight Shootout Rodriguez took the win on his Yamaha R3, but only after fighting off Gray Pham on his KTM RC390. Pham finished a scant 0.4 seconds off Rodriquez’s back wheel, with Gabriel Hernandez only another 0.5 seconds back on his R3. Sunday’s race was even closer, with Rodriquez beating Hernandez to the checkered by just 0.1 second. Pham didn’t race due to a crash in practice, allowing Ruben Casarez to snag the final podium spot.

Matt Cavarlez swept the 250 class both days on his Kawasaki Ninja 250R, with Don Williams and Emily Grana, both on Ninja 250Rs, rounding out the podium.

Racing resumes at Chuckwalla on December 3-4th.

CVMA offers two full days of racing every race weekend and also includes Saturday qualifying for grid position in all classes, amateur and expert, as well as a wide variety of classes to choose from.

Additionally, CVMA offers free reciprocity as a means of encouraging racers from other clubs to come out and compete. Log on to www.cvmaracing.com for more information.
