Stefano Mesa dominated the podium at Roebling Road Raceway during the Championship Cup Series Florida and Southeast regions’ Twin Sprints event featuring AMA sanctioned ASRA Sprints presented by Pirelli Tire. The two-day event featuring 16 races on Saturday and 19 on Sunday, was plagued with sporadic rain and relentless humidity. In spite of the undesirable track conditions, the event provided highly competitive classes and produced a number of multiple race winners, with Mesa standing out in another undefeated weekend with a grand total eight victories.
Saturday races kicked off with Mesa taking over the lead from Carl Soltisz in the 25-minute GTU race, and proceeding to open a gap on the rest of the field. He kept his self-sponsored Kawasaki ZX-6R out front to complete 16 laps and take the first checkered flag of the weekend. Arnold Hastings finished second ahead of Soltisz, George Letakis, and Walter French, Jr.
Mark Evry was out front in the second race of the day to take his first of seven victories on board his Yamaha FZR400 in the GT 500 Class of the 25-minute race. Brian Surtees dominated the front of the field with his Yamaha TZ250 to claim victory in the GTL class of that combined race. Evry went on win the Superbike 500, Lightweight Classic, and Supersport 500 races on Saturday, then came back out Sunday with victories in the second runnings of the Supersport 500, Superbike 500, and Lightweight Classic races.
Darrin Klemens also completed the weekend with seven victories, winning the Middleweight Formula 40, Ultralight Superbike, Lightweight Supersport, and Supersport 500 classes on Saturday. Then winning the Lightweight Formula 40, Middleweight Formula 40, and second runnings of the Lightweight Supersport and Ultralight Superbike classes on Sunday.
Keegan Brown was the winningest amateur of the weekend, also with seven victories. Day one ended with Keegan finishing first in the Amateur GT 500, Superbike 500, Moto 3, and Supersport 500 races. He ended day two with victories again in the Moto 3 and Supersport 500 classes, and won the nine-lap ASRA Moto 3 race, finishing ahead of Brittanie LaPrade, Anthony Pagan, and Nicole Ball.
Mesa notably won the first and last races of the weekend by finishing with twin victories in the Unlimited Grand Prix class. Saturday’s running of the race started with Jason Waters nabbing the holeshot lead with his BMW S1000RR and Mesa in hot pursuit. The two entered the front straight side-by-side, before the half-way flag, with Mesa making his passing move on his Kawasaki ZX-10R as they maneuvered through turn one. He was able to maintain the advantage the remainder of the six-lap sprint race to claim victory with Waters close behind in second, Chase Alewine in third, and Jason Parker fourth.
The second running of the Unlimited Grand Prix race took place on wet, but drying asphalt, with Waters out front early again and Mesa methodically working his way through traffic. Mesa made his passing move in this round, on the front straight, again before the half-way flag, to take over the lead and his final victory of the weekend. Waters finished second with Jesse Ruehling, Alewine, and Lloyd Bayley rounding off the top five. Mesa’s other victories included the Unlimited Supersport and Middleweight Supersport races on Saturday, and the Middleweight Superbike, and second runnings of the Unlimited Supersport and Middleweight Supersport races on Sunday.
Lloyd Bayley won the nine-lap Expert ASRA Superstock race Sunday afternoon after the rain that lasted throughout the hour-long lunch break. He rode his BMW S1000RR on the wet track to take the lead from early frontrunner Alewine as the frontrunners worked their way through lap traffic in this combined race. Bayley, Alewine, and Parker completed the podium in this class.
Walter French, Jr. won the Expert ASRA Sportbike class on board his Suzuki GSX-R600 on a still damp, but drying track. Alewine and Aaron Galloway rounded off the top three after nine completed laps in this combined class.
The CCS Southeast region is scheduled to compete next at NC Bike September 12-13th, in a Twin Sprints event. The next round for the Florida region will occur at Daytona International Speedway during the 37th annual Race of Champions event (all regions) October 16-18th, including the AMA Sanctioned ASRA Championship Series Presented by Pirelli Tire, and the rescheduled 79th Daytona 200.
