Hurtado Adds to His Lead with Two Wins at Arroyo Seco Raceway

Expert David Hurtado won two races last Sunday, October 9 at Arroyo Seco Raceway in Deming, New Mexico. In the Unlimited Superstock sponsored by kurveygirl.com, the first race of the day, the hole shot was nabbed by none other than Jason Brown on his Suzuki GSXR1000. Mikey Shreve and his Yamaha YZF-R1 entered the first-turn Kink second, with Eric Sotomayer, also onboard a GSXR1000, in the third position. Sotomayer was the first to fall prey to Hurtado and his Kawasaki ZX-10R when he was passed in the back straight that very lap. Four laps later, Hurtado attempted to squeeze in front of Shreve entering the Kink, but he instead kept close to Shreve’s rear tire and made the pass at the very same place the next lap. The Kink was the corner with all of the action, and just after the white-flag was raised, Hurtado once again broke latest to pass Brown for the lead and victory.

The premier event Formula Arroyo sponsored by Evan Steel Performance was almost a carbon copy of the Unlimited Superstock earlier in the day. After passing Shreve during the fifth lap and Brown a lap later in the Kink, Hurtado put his head down and never looked back for the remaining six laps of the race. In the process, Hurtado reached a personal best lap time for the clockwise direction, a red hot 1:07.993. Second to the checkers was Brown, trailing five seconds behind Hurtado, and Shreve came in third to claim the final step of the podium. Brown’s best lap time was a 1:09.621, and Shreve’s best was a 1:08.995.

The top three positions for the Formula Arroyo are still up for grabs, and next month’s race, the final round of the season, will decide the champion. Scheduled for Sunday, November 13, the top three are guaranteed to fight tooth and nail; Hurtado will enter the final bout with a fifteen-point lead, followed by Brown in second place and Shreve in third, a mere two points between the two.
