McDonough, Faussett and Shanahan Crowned OMRRA Champions at Portland International Raceway

The first weekend of fall gave way to cool, misty mornings and warm afternoons as OMRRA hosted the final event of the 2016 season at Portland International Raceway. The action was fast and furious with speeds topping 190 down PIR’s famed, long straight. OMRRA’s finale produced three new champions: Winning the Overall Championship and #1 plate – Devon McDonough, the Clubman Championship (1c) – Adam Faussett and Vintage Championship (1v) – Ryan Shanahan.

In the KFG Racing Formula Ultra Championship, Devon McDonough of Damascus, OR having already secured the #1 plate, set off to break the lap record in Open Supersport. Conditions would delay McDonough run at the record for another year. McDonough would have to be content with winning both Formula Ultra contests, as well as Open Supersport and Open Superbike. A side note and perhaps a cherry on top for the youngster, McDonough did pilot his supersport-prepared machine the quickest one has gone at PIR (1:05.880) but since it didn’t occur in class, the record remains. McDonough will have to wait until 2017 to take a run at it officially. On attempting the record and his championship, McDonough said, “We had a goal to achieve. We ran out front and accomplished everything we had set for the year! I can’t thank my mechanics, Chuck and my Dad enough for what they did to get me here.” {read the rest of the DM63 Racing press release below the official OMRRA results}

The final round of the KFG Formula Championship showed the strength of the 2016 class. 2015 OMRRA #1 Ryan Sutton returned to form chasing McDonough to the line in Saturday’s race to the line but had to fight back valiantly from an opening lap that had him back in 7th. Despite the slow start, Sutton came charging back on an inspired run for a hard earned 2nd position in the sprint race. Kevin Pinkstaff showed consistency throughout the weekend, fending off the likes of Jeremy Coffey, Sam Verderico, Danny Lippis and Christopher Ancien for the third spot on the podium. The final races of the 2016 were fast with many of the aforementioned racers within contention for the podium.

KFG Racing Formula Ultra Championship Standings – Round 6 of 6:

1: Devon McDonough – 259 pts

2: Kevin Pinkstaff – 183 pts

3: Jeremy Coffey – 139 pts

4: Sam Verderico – 123 pts

5: Danny Lippis – 114 pts

In the APEX Clubman Championship, which sees competitors from a variety of classes in a points race based on the best of two classes, Adam Faussett was crowned the new champion. Faussett fought off a slew of competitors in the highly competitive, small-bore classes astride his Ninja 300. Faussett picked up wins and championships in the hard-fought Lightweigtht Supersport, Ultralightweight Supersport and Ultralightweight Superbike classes. Andy DiBrino will likely need to build a new shelf picking up four wins and accompanying class championships in the 600 Supersport, 600 Superbike, 750 Supersport and 750 Superbike. Giving chase to DiBrino and battling hard for the remainder of the podium, Alex Lou, Jai Armstrong, Cullen King, Philip Melnyk look exceptionally strong and gave chase all weekend. Brian Moe scored his first win of the 2016 by inching out Steve Suitor by .001 in Middlweight Supersport. Novice Julie Razo picked up her first career win astride a Yamaha R6. Oliver Jervis picked up wins and the class championship in Formula4 and Middleweight Superbike.

APEX Clubman Championship Standings – Round 6 of 6:

1: Adam Faussett – 272 pts

2: Oliver Jervis – 254 pts

3: Devon McDonough – 239 pts

4: Alex Taylor – 210 pts

5: Steve Suitor – 206 pts

Entering the final round in the Langlitz Leathers Vintage Championship, Ryan Shanahan held a mere 3.5 point lead over Dean Willoughby and a 5 point lead over Mica Grohn. The trio’s first race of the weekend in Vintage Middleweight saw Willoughby crash out mid-race and into the tire barriers at Portland International’s famed final corner and knocking himself out of the contention for the championship lead. Willoughby would watch from the sidelines the remainder of the weekend as Shanahan and Grohn duked it out. Shanahan took victory in both Vintage Middlweight races securing the championship on Saturday. Grohn would rally back Sunday and do the double by less than a bike length in both contests. When the dust settled, Ryan Shanahan had strung together a successful campaign of wins and podiums unseating two-time champoion Grohn, going from the ‘Sunday spoiler’ to the 2016 Langlitz Leathers OMRRA Vintage Champion. Congratulations, Ryan Shanahan!

Langlitz Leathers Vintage Championship Standings – Round 6 of 6:

1: Ryan Shanahan – 158 pts

2: Mica Grohn – 153 pts

3: Dean Willoughby – 120 pts

4: Daric Cheshire – 80.5 pts

5: Shane Furrer – 55 pts

More, from a press release issued by DM63 Racing:

Devon McDonough– “Having already wrapped up the championships during the last round, the team had some specific goals to finish off the season at Portland International Raceway. We had been beating on the door of a 1:05 lap the last three rounds, so I knew we could get there. Since the previous round, we made adjustments to the bike’s geometry trying to increase rear grip. Damp conditions early in the weekend turned early practice sessions into data gathering sessions. By Sunday, conditions were right and through experience gained in the Formula Ultra race by the last lap of the last race of the day and season, we were able to get a 1:05.8 on our supersport-prepped Kawasaki ZX-10 by EDR Performance. We had a goal in mind, we ran out front and accomplished everything we had set for the year! I can’t thank my mechanics, Chuck and my Dad enough for what they did to get me here.”

Devon McDonough and DM63 Racing have many sponsors and supporters to thank for an incredible season. In no particular order of importance and appreciated more than mere words can convey, THANK YOU to all of our 2016 sponsors, supporters and fans.

Kawasaki North America — Adam Fausett, Jesse Koeller and KNA for helping supply us with the best racing machines on the planet. They have been just awesome to work with and what a package Kawasaki !! Well done!

Power Motorsports, Sublimity, OR — David Sibley and his his full Power Motorsports team have really stepped up as our dealer sponsor. I couldn’t ask for better people to work with!

EDR Performance – This was our first season working with Eric Dorn and his team. They were tasked with taking a stock ZX-10 and turning it into a supersport level machine able to take on superbikes. Eric and his crew did a masterful job making the already strong package like a rocket ship! I learned so much from him on just what it takes to make fast bikes go faster. EDR’s trackside support is top-notch. It’s a real confidence boost knowing they are behind us at the shop and the track!

GP Suspension / Penske – Barry Wressell of KFGRacing.com worked closely with us to tame this beast, keep it pointed in the right direction, producing data and solutions on a new package.

Pirelli Tires / Sol Performance / CT Racing / Oscar, DJ, Corey and Chris – The best tires, the best people! These guys have always believed in me and I couldn’t be happier to be racing on their black donuts. They are always improving and pushing the edge!

Ken Hill – Continual coaching and training are pivotal to a strong program and this year we invited Ken Hill to lend his experience and coaching to the program. From our first conversation, I knew he would make me a better rider. I look forward to picking up as much knowledge and learning his approach to going fast!

A special thanks to SpeedMob / Arrow Exhaust / Motion Pro / Brake Tech / Ferodo Brakes / Evol Technologies / Moto-D / Joe Signs / Hustle Hard Racing / Sidi Boots / Bell Helmets / Racer Gloves USA Renthal / Cox Racingroup

Again, thank you all sponsors, supporters and fans. We look forward to going fast again in 2017.
