May Breaks Lap Record

CCS Mid-Atlantic and Southeast Regions

Virginia International Raceway, Danville, VA

September 17-18, 2016

Geoff May set a new lap record with the CCS Mid-Atlantic and Southeast Championships regions event during the VIR End of Summer Cyclefest Unlimited Superbike race on Sunday at Virginia International Raceway. May broke the record during lap three of the seven lap sprint race with a 1:26.526 lap time on his TTR Kawasaki ZX-10R. The long standing record had been held by Jeff Wood since 2008. Wood’s lap time of 1:26.540 was set on June 22, 2008, on a Suzuki GSX-R1000.

Frankie Babuska, Jr. had nailed the holeshot at the start of the Unlimited Superbike race on his Babuska Racing Yamaha YZF-R1 with James Shepherd and Jason Farrell in hot pursuit. But May was on a mission and stepped up the pace putting his machine out front to lead the remaining six laps of the sprint race with Babuska close behind in second. May took his third and final checkered flag of the weekend with Babuska, Farrell, Lloyd Bayley, and Tyler Smathers rounding off the top five.

During Saturday’s lineup, May was out front early in the Unlimited Supersport race to take his first victory of the weekend. Tyler Smathers was the early leader of the Unlimited Grand Prix race on his Superbike Unlimited Yamaha YZF-R1 with May working his way up front from a fifth place start. By lap two, May was in the lead with Smathers close behind and James Shepherd working his way up to third. The two front runners slowly started to open gaps on the rest of the field and eventually through lapped traffic. May took the checkered flag without challenge. Smathers finished second with Shepherd, Craig Miller, and Ryan Kerr close behind. Behind them, William Gawler led the amateur class from start to finish on his Gawler Motorsports Suzuki GSX-R1000 for the win. Luigi Mora, Colin Good, Jonathan Patti, and Mark Spinak rounded off the top five in Amateur Unlimited Grand Prix.

Anthony Mazziotto, III had a standout weekend with four victories including winning the Team Challenge Overall and GTU class after completing 89 laps riding solo on his Jimmy Winters Motorsports Yamaha YZF-R6. He also won the GTU Middleweight Supersport, and Supersport 500 classes and finished second in Heavyweight Supersport.

Next on the schedule for all regions is the 33rd Annual Race of Champions at Daytona International Speedway, October 14-16th for the Championship Cup Series featuring AMA Sanctions ASRA Sprint Series Presented by Pirelli Tire and ASRA Team Challenge Series Presented by Michelin Tire.

Max Angles traveled from Hialeah, Florida to become the winningest amateur of the weekend with four first-place finishes. Angles won the Heavyweight Supersport, Middleweight Superbike, Middleweight Grand Prix and Heavyweight Superbike classes on his Yamaha YZF-R6. He finished second in GTU.
