Hurtado Wins Two ASMA Races At Arroyo Seco Raceway

Expert David Hurtado won two races last Sunday, September 11 at Arroyo Seco Raceway in Deming, New Mexico. The fifth round of racing resumed after a two-month break, and Hurtado came back strong to separate himself from Jason Brown and claim sole ownership of the top position in the premier series Formula Arroyo sponsored by Evan Steel Performance. Entering the weekend, the top two separated themselves from third-place Mikey Shreve by a sliver of two points, who hoped wins at SMRI during the ASMA break would provide a wave of momentum he could ride into the latter half of the season.

Brown and his Suzuki GSXR1000 clinched the hole shot in the Formula Arroyo, with Shreve and Hurtado close behind. A lap later Shreve passed Brown on the inside of Yucca, and Hurtado followed suit when he passed Brown inside the Horseshoe on lap three. The Horseshoe had all the action in the race, as Hurtado passed Shreve on lap four at the exit of the bend. By lap seven Hurtado had eked out a comfortable gap on second-place Shreve. It seemed that the race would come to a close without any further changes in the top three positions, but Kelcey Walker and his Yamaha YZF-R6 had closed in on Brown with four laps remaining. Brown must have his seen Walker in his shadow, as he stepped it up and managed to keep Walker and his dash in the twisties at bay with the GSXR1000’s horses on the straights.

Shreve was on the march to add to his three-point lead in the Unlimited Superstock series sponsored by kurveygirl.com, the first race of the day. From hole shot to the last lap, Shreve led the race with help from his Yamaha YZF-R1’s stunning drive on the back straight. Heading into the Carousel and with the checkers nearly in sight, Shreve suddenly had company when Hurtado squeezed past with phenomenal late braking. With only the Kink and the front straight left, Shreve had little time to respond and beat Hurtado to the finish line.

A weekend of personal bests, the top three can boast of conquering their previous lap times. Shreve, the victor in this category, finished the day with a jaw-dropping 1:08.121. Hurtado and Brown almost matched each other with a 1:08.254 and a 1:08.259, respectively.

The penultimate round of ASMA racing is scheduled October 9, with the customary testing day October 8.

Mikey Shreve:

“Nothing was working till right before qualifying; we were working backwards, but then Phil Allison from ESP (Evan Steel Performance) helped with the setup. I felt real good in the first race. There were a few personal mistakes, like when I hit a false neutral and Dave (Hurtado) got around. I’m looking forward to HPR next week, to having some fun with the Colorado boys. We’re going there with the intent to win.”

David Hurtado:

“The brake pads made a difference (this weekend); I switched to Vesrahs and they helped with the late braking. ESP-tuned rear shock and quick-shifter made for better power and traction–––the bike was on! No spinning of the rear this time, and I stayed focused during the races. I’m hoping to get into the 7s next round.”
