Classic Riviera di Rimini venue signs new agreement to host MotoGP™ for a minimum of another 4 years

The promoters of the Gran Premio di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini and Dorna Sports are delighted to announce the future of the MotoGP™ event held at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, as a new agreement sees the event set to stay on the MotoGP™ calendar until at least 2020.

The Gran Premio di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini is one of the most exciting events on the MotoGP™ calendar and was a sold-out show in 2015. The modified track returned to the calendar in 2007 and has since become one of the flagship events throughout the season and in Italian motorsport, with the support and passion of the fans, Riviera di Rimini and local legend Valentino Rossi creating an incredible spectacle. 2016 sees the tenth edition of the event in a row touch down at the classic Adriatic circuit, with crowds once again ready to enjoy the unrivaled spectacle of MotoGP™ at one of its most treasured venues.

The contract signing gathered together Carmelo Ezpeleta – CEO of Dorna Sports, Teodoro Lonfernini – Repubblica di San Marino Secretary of State for Tourism and Sport; Gian Carlo Capicchioni – Repubblica di San Marino Secretary of State for Finances and Budget; Andrea Corsini – Regione Emilia Romagna Council Member for Tourism; Andrea Gnassi – Provincia di Rimini President and Luca Coaiacovo – Santa Monica SpA President.

Teodoro Lonfernini – Repubblica di San Marino Secretary of State for Tourism and Sport: “With today’s signature on the agreement renewal, San Marino Republic is reconfirming its role as a protagonist in MotoGP’s project, a touristic and sport event of great international and media exposure. With a reduced economical effort in comparison to previous years and with further reinforcement of synergies with the surrounding territorial institutions, our Country decided it was important being still part of it.”

Andrea Corsini – Regione Emilia Romagna Council Member for Tourism: “We welcome this renewal with great satisfaction, as a result of a virtuous team-play between Region, municipalities and Misano World Circuit. San Marino and Riviera di Rimini Grand Prix represents one of the spearheads in Emilia Romagna Motorvalley’s events agenda. A real touristic product that is able to generate about 350 thousand tourist numbers in Riviera and that is enriched with a number of appealing side events.”

Andrea Gnassi – Provincia di Rimini President: “The effort in giving a future to MotoGP is the effort of an entire land that loves it and and feels it as its own. We already told the relevant numbers of touristic attendance and media appeal that MotoGP generates, but what happens around MotoGP goes further the extraordinary opportunity that our Riviera has to attract outstanding numbers in a period like September. It is also the recognition of one of the passions shared between our people: love for motors and races, that makes this land a unique focus of technology and passion. We are the starting point of Via Emilia, a land of motors, great riders, technicians, designers that the whole world longs for. Motor Valley is one of the major asset of regional touristic promotion on which Rimini is working hard and that, with these kind of initiatives, we contribute to spread to the world, giving value to both products and destinations, because only this way it is possible to encourage the complexity of interests and desires of our guests.”

Luca Colaiacovo, Santa Monica SpA President: “Investments, professionalism and passion. We feel another four years of MotoGP at Misano World Circuit as the eulogy of the job done by an international-level team, that during this decade reinforced Simoncelli’s as one of the most welcoming and safe international circuits. MotoGP is the spearhead of a long season of events. MWC is the stage of global events and it’s fully integrated within the formidable Motor Valley brand, defining a land able to win any challenge.”

Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports: “The confirmation of San Marino and Riviera di Rimini GP for the next four years guarantees the MotoGP™ calendar a date of great sporting importance. Here it has been possible to reinforce a winning formula between public promoters and the Circuit. During these ten years we witnessed an impetuous growth of interest and attention. At the same time, a number of promotional projects are coming out on top, exalting a global cradle of passion for motors, with extraordinary champions and new talents on track. The Circuit has spent generous and incessant investments to safely welcome spectators and races. There are all the ingredients for further growth. In the meantime, let’s get ready for the days ahead where the common passion for motorcycling, thanks to the events and challenges in the circuit, will have again provide unrivaled satisfaction and emotion.”

The tenth edition of the Gran Premio di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini since its return to Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will get underway on Friday 9th September, as Riviera di Rimini-raised legend Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) attempts to chase down arch-rival Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) in the quest for a tenth world title.
