Mike Zottmann clinches 2016 EMRA Superbike title.

September 2-4th was the biggest weekend of racing in the 2016 EMRA season at Castrol Raceway. The weekend would feature Rounds 5 and 6 of racing and was full of tight racing and championship points battles coming to an end. Mother nature would throw a twist in the racing by dropping ambient temperatures in the mornings to 5 degrees Celsius and raising them to a chilly and windy 13-15 Celsius under a constant threat of rain.

The cold temperatures and rain-shortened qualifying sessions held on Friday caught a number of riders by surprise, but as always the riders would persevere, finding ways to overcome the conditions and put in solid lap times. Superbike point leader, Mike Zottmann, would claim pole position riding his Bow Cycle/Kawasaki Canada/ZBM Racing ZX-10R, the first step to clinching a second consecutive EMRA Superbike title on this weekend. In 600 Superbike qualifying, Trevor Bernhardt would take pole position riding his Bow Cycle/ZBM Racing ZX-6R.

Saturday’s Round 5 600 Superbike race saw Trevor Bernhardt and Ryan Boddy on his Pet Auto Body Yamaha YZF-R6 quickly gap the field from the start of the race. Ryan would shadow Trevor and match his pace, but never have an opportunity to close in and make a solid pass for the lead. The two would finish the 600 Superbike race separated by 2.6 seconds.

The Round 6 600 Superbike race was another display of skilled riding by Trevor Bernhardt, gapping the depleted 600 Superbike grid. Fourteen seconds back, Brian Worsdall would finish in second place after having crashed out of Saturday’s racing and spending all of Saturday night repairing the damage to his Honda Extreme backed CBR600RR. Sixteen seconds back, Ryan Boddy would finish in 3rd place riding a borrowed bike, having also crashed out during an earlier race on Sunday, and unable to repair the damage to his bike in time for the 600 Superbike race. Trevor after the race commented, “Sunday was even cooler than Saturday, and very little sunshine. With the cooler temperatures, I opted for a Pirelli SC2 rear to try to last in the cold. Unfortunately this turned out to be the wrong decision, and Ryan Body was able to pass with comfort and win the 600 Supersport race with ease. After lunch I opted for the SC1 slick, and on the outlap I was confident I would not get beaten. I would get the hole shot and keep the lead till the end of the race, and with it the Championship in 600 Superbike too.”

The first Superbike race of the weekend got off to an incredibly fast start. Mike Zottmann took advantage of his pole position, nailed the hole shot and never looked back. For three laps he would be closely shadowed by Justin Knapik, on lap three in an odd sequence of events Justin Knapiks ZX-10R would have its chain come off the rear sprocket. Justin would quickly come to a stop, remount the chain and finish the race one lap down collecting a valuable 4 points for last place. A close battle for second place quickly developed between Jason Kolmatycki riding his Riverside Yamaha YZF-R1M, Peter Meier riding his ZBM Racing Ducati Panigale, and Ian Wall on his Argyll Motorsport GSX-R1000. The three riders would battle throughout the race, Ian Wall would begin to drop back struggling with rear tire grip. Jason Kolmatycki managed to find another gear and make the most of his first opportunity to claim a Superbike podium in the 2016 season. This would leave Peter Meier a hard fought 3rd place Superbike podium, also his first Superbike podium of the year. After a victory lap with the checkered flag Mike Zottmann would say “Heading into Superbike we knew with only 11 point advantage we needed to win. We went lower on tire pressures to get some heat as the track was still cold. I found my groove, and was able to settle in and start really pushing, setting another fastest lap time of the year.”

After two days of racing, the final race of the EMRA double header weekend would be the Superbike race. Justin Knapik would get an incredible start and first lap, taking the lead from Mike Zottmann. Mike would quickly reply with a series of blisteringly fast laps, despite a cold track and cold cloudy weather conditions. Justin Knapik would do everything he could to hold onto Mike and also managed to put in a seasons personal best lap time. The battle for the third and final step of the podium would be fought between 4 riders; Trevor Bernhardt, Ian Wall, Jason Kolmatycki, and Peter Meier would trade positions a number of times. The mix of machinery and skill of the riders piloting their motorcycles was a special treat for race fans. Trevor Bernhardt, a master of race management, knew he had his work cut out for him. Wringing every bit of horse power out of his Bow Cycle/ ZBM Racing ZX6R, he would break his own personal best and club record 600cc lap time, fighting his way past Jason Kolmatycki and taking 3rd place from Ian Wall with half a lap remaining. Mike Zottmann would sum up his race win and championship, “Once the lights went out I went full attack mode, took the lead on lap 2 and never looked back, stringing 7 laps in the low to mid 1:19 range, pulling a 5.5 second lead by the end. Wrapping up the titles with one race left feels great and we are excited to run the number one plate again next year! I’d like to thank all my sponsors for the year. Kawasaki for putting me on the new zx10r, Bow cycle, ZBM Racing, Pirelli tires, Ktech Suspensions, Hotbodies, Vortex, TechSpec, X-one suits, Chicken Hawk, Hindle exhaust, Galfer USA, Motion pro, and Red Rock garage. See you next round in a few weeks!”

The 7th and final round of racing in the 2016 EMRA season will take place at Castrol Raceway September 17-18. For more information check out www.emra.ca.
