The first round of the 1963 Grand Prix season was held at Montjuic Park, Spain, a twisty 2.35-mile street circuit. Imagine you’re a Honda team member warming up Jim Redman’s four-cylinder 250 Honda. Your team had an amazing 1962 season, winning the 125cc, 250cc and 350cc World Championships, Redman winning the latter two classes.

Your attention is drawn to a bike with a “wum-bah, wum-bah” exhaust note, a single-cylinder four-stroke on a grid of multi-cylinder two and four-stroke machines! The gas tank is like an Italian sculpture, the engine looks like it’s from the 1950s with exposed hairpin valve springs, and the single-sided front brake can’t be right…

Like many great racebikes, the 250 Morini benefitted from continual, painstaking development. And although not competitive at GP level after 1963, Giacamo Agostini, Angelo Bergamonti, and Walter Villa had great success on the Moto Morini 250 in the Italian Championships through 1967! Read the details of an improbable Grand Prix race winner and title challenger—it’s in the November  issue of Roadracing World.
