MotoAmerica Supersport racer Joe Roberts will not be competing in the Honda Superbike Showdown of California event this weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca due to injuries he suffered in a crash at Utah Motorsports Campus (UMC).

Roberts, who is currently fifth in the MotoAmerica Supersport Championship, was fighting among the leaders on lap three of Supersport/Superstock 600 Race Two June 25 at UMC when his Wheels in Motion/Meen Yamaha YZF-R6 lost traction and he crashed at high speed. Roberts, the 2015 MotoAmerica Superstock 600 Champion, walked away from the crash, but later, he was diagnosed with bone fractures in his right arm and hand.

“I’m really disappointed about missing this race,” Roberts said in a quote relayed to Roadracingworld.com by Team Owner Ameen Sajjadi. “I’ve never missed a race due to injury, so it’s kinda something new for me. I want to force myself to ride, but I’m just not strong enough with my arm and finger.

“I saw Dr. [Thomas] Bryan last week, which confirmed that I have a fracture at the head of my [right] radius and a chip in my [right middle] finger. The good news is that I don’t need a cast or surgery.

“I would love to ride at Laguna because it’s a track I’ve had great memories at, but due to lack of strength I wouldn’t be able to perform at my best and so the risks outweigh any benefit.

“I am looking forward to getting strong for New Jersey and putting in a great performance there. I’m sorry for the team, but I’ll be 100% at New Jersey in September. I love that track and I’m looking forward to racing there.”
