Round Two of the Edmonton Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s 2016 race season fired up on June 19th, just outside of Edmonton, Alberta at Castrol Raceway. Castrol Raceway is the largest racing facility in western Canada and houses the 2.7km, 14-turn road circuit. Track conditions were nearly perfect, with sunshine in the forecast all weekend. Expert Superbike qualifying on Saturday saw Mike Zottman set a fast pole position time onboard his ZBM Racing Bow Cycle ZX10R, that would not be beat despite the efforts of Justin Knapik on his Echo Cycle backed ZX-10R, and Peter Meier riding his ZBM Racing Ducati 1199 Panigale. In Expert 600 Superbike qualifying, Trevor Brenhardt would take pole position on his ZBM Racing Kawasaki ZX6R in front of Mike Yurko on his Redline Motorsport Yamaha R6, and Ryan Boddy on his Pet Auto Body Yamaha R6.
Sunday the weather forecast was sunny but with a chance of thunderstorms. A sudden down pour before the Formula Thunder race saw some riders scramble to switch to rain tires. As the race got started, the clouds broke and the sunshine returned and began to dry the track. Peter Meier and Scott Paras, having started the race on rain tires, quickly gapped the field and managed to hang onto that gap on a quickly drying track. Just finishing the race felt like a huge relief for Scott Paras, having made a small mistake during the Round One Formula Thunder race that would ultimately result in the destruction of his Aprilia RSV. “Peter was able to build a 4 second gap quickly, I just set my marks and tried to finish. Thankfully the track didn’t dry too quickly and I was able to put my Echo Cycle Dunlop tire shod RSV4-RR on the podium in second place.”
The sun would shine for the rest of the day and a large crowd of spectators would gather, setting the stage for a thrilling Expert 600 Superbike race. Lee Brady, riding his Yamaha R6, would get an incredible start and jump from 6th on the starting grid to 2nd place, close behind Mike Yurko. A tight pack of 6 riders would then battle throughout the race, swapping positions every lap. Lee Brady began to struggle to maintain the pace being set by Mike Yurko and was quickly passed by Trevor Brenhardt on his ZBM Racing ZX6R, and Jon Bullee on his Riverside Honda CBR600RR. Trevor Brenhardt then used his superb late braking skills to pass Mike Yurko and Jon Bullee at turn one, one lap after another and take the lead of the race. Slightly farther down the order, Brian Worsdall on his Honda Extreme CBR600RR and Ryan Boddy on his Pet Auto Body Yamaha R6, would also pass Lee Brady and tag onto the back of the top 3 riders, making a number of attempts to pass Jon Bullee, who remained glued to the back tire of Mike Yurko. The train of 6 bikes would cross the line with Trevor Brenhardt in first place, followed by Mike Yurko and Jon Bullee in the remaining two podium spots. After the race, Mike Yurko would say, “I got a good launch and got out front off the start. I led the first 3 laps trying to pull a gap. Trevor made a nice late break pass into corner one, leaving me to defend second place from the following 3 riders. Next round I hope to continue dropping my lap times and look to battle with Trevor for the victory.”
Shortly after that thrilling 600 Superbike race, the grand finale Expert Superbike grid would form on track awaiting starters orders under the beautiful Sunday afternoon sun. The red lights would go out and the race would be underway, but only for a short time. Halfway through the first lap, Jason Kolmatycki and his Riverside Motosport Yamaha R1, suffered a massive high side exiting turn 11 at the front of the pack, and riders behind him scattered in all directions. Luck would be on everyone’s side that race; Jason would walk away with bumps and bruises, his bike having taken an equally as fortunate bounce and suffering relatively little damage. The grid would reform and restart soon afterwards. Mike Zottmann would get the hole shot and never look back. After a few laps he managed to build a gap over Justin Knapik, who was alone in second place. Trevor Bernhardt managed to land on the final podium position, fighting off an early race challenge from Brian Worsdall and his BMWS1000RR. After the race, having earned another Superbike second place finish, Justin would comment, “My luck had me get a terrible restart, by half race Mike Zottmann and I had a large gap over the grid. I pushed to see if I could close on Mike and challenge for the lead, but Mike had the pace. The Expert Superbike championship has Mike with a 10 point lead at this point in the season, something I’d like to close down next round.”
