SNOWBIRDS FLOCK TO CHUCKWALLA FOR CVMA ROUND 4 JANUARY 9-10, 2016

Solis and Anderson Rack Up Wins During Mid-Winter Racing In SoCal

Ah, mid-winter. The time of year when Southern California pays its biggest dividends. Because while the majority of the US is under snow, temps are still in the 70s in SoCal, which means ideal conditions for racing. For round four of CVMA’s Winter Series the promise of fine weather and great racing drew riders from as far off as Colorado and Oklahoma, and the migration of snowbirds contributed to the club’s largest grids to date, with 325 entries listed for the weekend’s 29 races.

Although the days were warm they were still short and resulted in some races being reduced to just four laps. In Saturday’s truncated Formula Open race, James Romero got a stellar start on his Yamaha YZF-R1, but Daytona Anderson reeled him in on his Suzuki GSX-R1000, passing Romero on the last lap and taking the win. Mikey Shreve, visiting from New Mexico, rounded out the podium on his YZF-R1.

Sunday’s full-length Formula Open race followed a similar formula, with Romero getting the holeshot and Anderson slotting in behind in second. But Anderson struck immediately and moved into first on the second lap and managed to stretch his lead to 5.5 seconds by the time the checkered flag dropped. Jorge Covarrubias, riding his Yamaha YZF-R6, made a bold move on the last lap, passing Kris Aldeman on his YZF-R1 and securing third place.

Anderson dominated in Supersport Open as well, moving from third to first on the second lap of Saturday’s race and finishing 1.4 seconds ahead of James Romero, who finished nearly 3 seconds ahead of Mikey Shreve. In Sunday’s race Romero took the lead early on, only to be passed by Anderson on the fourth of six laps. Kris Aldeman rounded out the podium on Sunday.

The small-bike grids were massive this round and saw a return to the tight, ruthless racing that’s made the class a spectator favorite. Jason Madama, escaping the cold in Colorado, took the win in Saturday’s 350 Supersport race as well as Saturday and Sunday’s Ultra Lightweight Shootout race presented by Sunline Energy. Madama did well on his Yamaha R3, but in all cases local fast guys Josh Fogle, Shane Liberty, and Duncan Marding were close on his tail. Fogle put up a serious fight on his Ninja 250R, taking second in Saturday’s 350 Supersport class and a win in Sunday’s race.

Fast kid Benny Solis continued his winning streak in the middleweight classes with uncontended Formula Middleweight wins on both Saturday and Sunday aboard his Honda CBR600RR. Conner Blevins took second on Saturday on his Kawasaki ZX-6R with Jorge Covarrubias in third on his R6. On Sunday Blevins didn’t compete and Covarrubias crashed out. With the deck shuffled, Rafael DiSilva rode to second on his YZF-R6, narrowly avoiding being passed by a rapidly advancing Jake Tihanyi on his R6.

In Sunday’s 10-lap Middleweight Shootout presented by TrackDaz, Solis didn’t have it so easy. Conner Blevins found some speed early on and passed Solis for the lead on lap two. Blevins held off numerous attempts by Solis until lap six when Solis made a pass stick, then broke Blevins with a handful of blazing-fast laps. Solis finished nearly 8 seconds ahead of Blevins, while Jorge Covarrubias took third.

In Sundays’ 12-lap Open Shootout race presented by SoCal Track Days the holeshot went to Dale Kieffer on his Suzuki GSX-R1000, but he was soon passed by Conner Blevins and Benny Solis on their 600s. Blevins held first for the first half of the race until Solis passed for the lead. Kieffer slid back to third where he successfully fended off a hard-charging Daytona Anderson, while Blevins took second and Solis secured the win.
