GRT RACING TEAM MAKES ITS DEBUT IN THE SUPERSPORT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

The GRT Racing Team today announces that it will be participating in the 2106 FIM World Super Sport Championship. Gino Rea and Aiden Wagner will be riding the MV AGUSTA F3 675 motorcycles, commencing at Phillip Island in Australia in February. The team will be relying on the skills and experience of former rider Mirko Giansanti in his role as the Sporting and Technical Director.

Giansanti, who participated for many seasons in the 125 and 250 cc Grand Prix World Championships quotes: “This is a very important step for the GRT Racing Team to participate in the 2016 Super Sport World Championship. We have the potential to do very well. I am very excited about this new experience as Sporting and Technical Director in a category which is so important. I will give my maximum support and commitment to our two riders and hugely experienced technical team and support colleagues.”

Filippo Conti, the Team Manager of the GRT Racing Team quotes: “In 2016, we will be involved in a very ambitious and exciting project. We will be using MV Agusta motorcycles which is a well known and prestigious brand. In signing riders Gino Rea and Aiden Wagner, we are offering them the best technical equipment and environment in order for the GRT Racing Team to be competitive and for the two riders to realise their enormous potential. We thank all of our sponsors who are trusting us to deliver results and are delighted they have joined the project. We have complete trust in the skills and enthusiasm of the whole team”.

Gino Rea is an Anglo-Italian rider born in 1989. Gino began his career in 2007 in the Super Stock 600 European Championship, and continued in this category in 2008 and 2009. In 2009 Gino won the Super Stock 600 European Championship riding a Honda CBR600RR for the Ten Kate Honda Racing Team. In 2010 and 2011, Gino competed in the Super Sport World Championship with the Honda Intermoto Czech Team, before switching to the Moto2 category in 2012. Last season, Gino finished sixth overall on his return to the 2015 FIM World Super Sport Championship.

Gino quotes: “I am very excited and eager to start working with the GRT Racing Team! When I first started speaking with the team, I was filled with confidence that they will do everything it takes to give me a good package and so far they have gone above and beyond to put everything in place for 2016. I hope to repay their efforts and bring them the results they are seeking next year. It will be a building year for all of us as a team but I see no reason why we can’t be at the very sharp end and potentially challenging for race wins. The MV Agusta F3 675 looks like a fantastic bike and I can’t wait to ride it! Since my debut in World Supersport I have only raced on a Honda, so it’s also a new challenge for me which I’m looking forward to. I am grateful for this opportunity and very happy that I have been able to retain my crew chief from last year too, it’s nice to be able to build on our relationship. I’d like to thank my personal sponsors and support team who have helped make this opportunity possible. Testing can’t come soon enough!”

Gino will be complemented in the GRT Racing Team by Aiden Wagner. He is Australian, born in 1994 and was the winner of the Super Stock category in the extra-championship events held at Phillip Island during the 2102 MotoGP of Australia. Aiden was the Australasian Super Sport Champion in 2014 and then competed in a number of 2015 FIM World Super Sport Championship events in 2015. Aiden is now looking to build on his skills and experience with the GRT Racing Team in 2016.

Aiden quotes: “I’m really happy to be racing with the GRT Racing Team for the 2016 season. In addition to now knowing 70% of the tracks on the calendar, I think the combination of the team and the MV is going to be a great step forward for me. I anticipate a great team environment, all the guys are not only really good at what they do, but they are great to work with. All of this put together should be a strong package for some competitive racing and strong results for the season. I can’t wait to get underway at my home event at Phillip Island”.
