CVMA Racing Round 3 2021/2022 Winter Series
Round three of the CVMA racing series started off under blue skies, but colder temperatures. Even though the weather was a bit chilly, the racing on track heated up quickly.
On Friday, the New Racer school graduated 10 new racers into the sport and the club continues to grow each and every round. The New Racer race was especially exciting with a back-and-forth battle for the second and third positions which saw multiple passes on the final lap.
In Saturday morning qualifying, Michael Gilbert was the fastest of all on an open class bike turning a 1:45.653 lap time. Alejandro Thermiotis was the fastest middleweight rider with a 1:48.495 lap. John Knowles turned a 1:53.995 making him the fastest lightweight class rider, and Jayden Fernandez was fastest in the ultra lightweight bikes with a 1:57.674 lap.
One of the most exciting races on Saturday took place in the amateur supersport middleweight class. The top five riders swapped positions multiple times each lap with Eric Arnett taking the win. From the start, Arnett and Kevin Hosseini led. Jesus Villalobos, Geiser Hernandez and Travis Peterson diced it up with the leaders for the first few laps. After being passed for the lead, Arnett ran wide out of turn 10 and fell back several positions. Meanwhile, Villalobos was able to take the lead with Hosseini running second. Arnett was able to work his way back to the front passing both Hosseini and Villalobos on the final laps. Villalobos held on to second position to the end. In a late race charge, Peterson was able to pass both Hernandez and Hosseini to round out the podium positions in third.
Early Sunday morning, Michael Gilbert and Andy DiBrino squared off in the fourth race of the day, Supersport Open. Gilbert got the holeshot with DiBrino close behind. Gilbert led the entire race with DiBrino not giving him an inch and pressuring him the entire race. The two riders set new lap records for the class almost every lap with Gilbert setting a new record early and then lowering it further a lap later. DiBrino, however, was able to go faster still on the penultimate lap of the race to lower the record to a 1:44.823. Gilbert won the race with DiBrino a close second. Sam Lochoff finished third racing a 600cc bike against the 1000cc bikes in the class.
The Open Shootout race was a very close race with the top three riders setting new lap records lap after lap throughout the beginning of the race. David “Aussie Dave” Anthony took third in the race but had the fastest lap time and a new lap record with 1:44.777. From the start, DiBrino got the holeshot and led the first five laps with Gilbert and Anthony close behind in second and third, respectively. Just past the half way point in the race, Gilbert was able to pass DiBrino entering Turn Eight to take the lead. After that pass, Gilbert slowly extended his lead to take the win by about a one-second margin. DiBrino finished second with Anthony third. Rounding out the top five were Anthony Norton and Lochoff finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the Superport Shootout, Lochoff dominated from the start, setting a new lap record of 1:45.351 and winning the race by a wide margin. Chad Lewin and Chris Sarbora finished second and third, respectively.
CVMA offers two full days of racing every race weekend and also includes Saturday qualifying for grid position in all classes, amateur and expert, as well as a wide variety of classes to choose from.
