Hayes Wins MotoAmerica Superbike Race 1 At New Jersey; Closes Gap To Teammate And Championship Leader Beaubier
Millville, NJ – September 13, 2015 – It’s clear that four-time and defending AMA Superbike Champion Josh Hayes is not going to give up his crown easily. And, in Sunday’s penultimate MotoAmerica Superbike race of the season, Josh won his 9th Superbike race of the season to move to within 13 points of his Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha teammate Cameron Beaubier, who finished second and is atop the Superbike Championship points standings.
After starting from the pole, Josh and Cameron had to battle through a restart caused by a red flag due to a fallen rider and a second red flag due to rain, which ended the race four laps early. Cameron had been leading the race, and Josh got around his teammate just in the nick of time to be declared the winner when the race was called on the next lap.
For Josh, it was his 9th win of the season and, after celebrating on the podium, he said, “I thought (Cameron and Roger Hayden) had more pace than me, so I’m a little surprised to be up here. I needed to get to the front, so I was willing to take some chances to make that happen. So, now, it comes down to the final race of the season. We’ll see what happens.”
“It was a little tense there when it started drizzling,” Cameron said. “It helped to follow Josh around because he looked pretty comfortable, so I figured I should be, too. I was trying to do what I needed to do to win this Championship, and a (race) win would’ve been better, but I’m happy with second.”
