R.I.P. Former World Championship Racer Joan Garriga

Joan (Juan) Garriga, 52, died today in Barcelona, Spain as the result of injuries sustained in a streetbike accident on August 24, according to reports from news outlets in his home country of Spain.

Garriga made his World Championship debut in the 250cc class in 1984, when he finished 14th in the Grand Prix of Yugoslavia. He raced four full seasons in the 250cc GP World Championship and four full seasons in the 500cc GP World Championship.

He won three 250cc races during his career and finished runner-up to Sito Pons in the 1988 250cc GP World Championship.

He finished on the 500cc GP podium once with a third-place finish in the British Grand Prix.

His final World Championship appearance was in the 500cc GP at Catalunya in 1993. He finished ninth in that race.
