AMA Road Race Grand Championship class update

The Championship Cup Series, the American Motorcyclist Association’s promoting partner for the AMA Road Race Grand Championship at Virginia International Raceway on Sept. 19-20, is announcing a class change for the amateur championship event.

In light of the United States Grand Prix Riders Union announcement regarding the USGPRU Moto 3 class, new configuration and displacement rules are being put in place for the Moto 3 class at the AMA Road Race Grand Championship. To remain in line with the AMA-sanctioned USGPRU Series, the Moto 3 class will now be open to production-based machines such as the Kawasaki Ninja 300, Yamaha R-3 and the KTM 390.

“Facing the shortage of true 125 two-stroke and 250 four-stroke GP machines available to the U.S. market, there are very few options to keep this series and class viable for the future,” said USGPRU President Stu Aitken-Cade. “This rule change will take effect beginning at the New Jersey Motorsports Park Round on Sept. 5-6 and continue on through the 2016 season.”

The Championship Cup Series will be joining the AMA and USGPRU in changing its Moto 3 class to mirror the AMA and USGPRU class rules as of Sept. 1, 2015, at all events promoted from the Fort Worth office and affiliate organizations.

Moto 3

Two stroke, single cylinder, up to 125cc

Four stroke, single cylinder, up to 375cc

Four stroke, twin cylinder, up to 325cc

The AMA Road Race Grand Championships are open to all sportsman road racers who hold a current AMA membership and road racing license from a recognized organization. Riders who hold Moto America professional racing licenses for Superbike, Superstock or SuperSport are excluded from the AMA Road Race Grand Championships unless prior written approval is granted by AMA Racing.
