Team Cleland/Ortt and MiniMotion Take the Top Spots at MotorSport Ranch with CMRA

The Brandon Cleland/Braeden Ortt team took the Overall Team 60 and Team 60 Heavyweight win while the MiniMotion team of Alonzo Contreras, Chris Headley, Jeff Hughes, and Ryan Max Johnson brought home the Overall and 500 Superstock Endurance win in 6-Hour Ultra-Lightweight Endurance this past Saturday, July 25. The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) began its fifth round of the season on Saturday with a 6-Hour Ultra-Lightweight Endurance, Lightweight Sprints, and Team 60 race, bringing over 10 hours of racing action to MotorSport Ranch in Cresson, Texas. Blazing heat with temperatures in the low 100’s and a warm breeze, large grids and fast lap times greeted competitors on the 1.7-mile, 11-turn clockwise course.

The Lightweight Sprint grids kicked off Saturday’s racing action, with the Four81 Motos – Grom Challenge, Altus Lawton Motorsports – E Superstock, and Altus Lawton Motorsports – Ultra Lightweight GP having over 20 entries, leading up to the 6-Hour Ultra-Lightweight Endurance race and its huge combined grid of 37 teams, with 500 Classic, 500 Superstock, Ultra Lightweight GP, E Superstock Endurance, and Formula 4 Endurance represented.

The starting lights went out, sending the MiniMotion team of Alonzo Contreras, Chris Headley, Jeff Hughes, and Ryan Max Johnson and the Pretty Hate Machine team of Jesse Davis, Alan Phillips, and David Tiede, both riding Honda CBR500Rs, immediately into battle for the lead. The Honda CBR500R mounted teams of Team Von Hertell/Harris Hill and Faltless Racing, duked it out right behind the leader. Meanwhile, just two slots back, the riders of Pretty Hate Machine who were doing double duty racing on a Honda RVF 400 as Pretty Mouth Machine, had their hands full with the Unobtanium Racing team of Braeden Ortt, John Redford, and Gavin Williams aboard a Kawasaki 300R, and Lawpup Racing on a Kawasaki 250R. Minimotion and Pretty Hate Machine went back and forth for the lead over the length of the race, with several battles for position stretched back throughout the entire field. The Kawasaki 250R mounted Team Honey Badger wrestled with the Honda CBR250R mounted team Something for a podium in E Superstock, and Halffast Racing aboard their Kawasaki 250R took on JT’s Performance Plus’s Kawasaki 300R in a podium bid in Ultra Lightweight GP Endurance.

With the clock winding down, MiniMotion gained the upper hand during the last hour, holding the lead to the checkers, finishing first overall and first in 500 Superstock Endurance at 4:46 pm. Pretty Mouth Machine got around the Faltless Racing team of Robert Bradlaw, Danny Dominguez, Bill Erzal, Eric Falt, and Ted Phillips for second overall and first in 500 Classic Endurance. Faltless Racing finished third overall and second in 500 Classic Endurance.

The final race of the day was the Dunlop/Race Tire Services Team 60 race, with the popular LeMans-style start used for the 27 team grid. The action started with a lot of riders getting a better run across to their bikes, as several bikes simultaneously launched. As the first couple laps of the race spread the grid out, Joseph Caruso of the team Caruso/Young took the lead on his BMW S1000RR, holding off Cory Burleson of Burleson/Montgomery on a Suzuki GSX-R600 and Ty Howard from team Ty Howard/Derek Wagnon on his KTM 1290 Super Duke. Braeden Ortt of the Cleland/Ortt team picked his way through the grid from the very back of the pack, making his way all the way up to fourth on his Yamaha YZF-R6. As the pack spread out, two riders came together in the turn Ricochet, bringing out the red flag and a race stoppage.

The second LeMans start for the restart had Brandon Cleland on the line for the run. This was the first race back for Number One plate holder Brandon Cleland after a bad crash at Hallett in May, and he was in excellent race form, taking the lead from Brandon Young just before the first lap of the race was even finished, and took off, turning the fastest lap of the race with a 1:16.496 on Lap 13. Brandon Young of the Joseph Caruso/Brandon Young team put his Suzuki GSX-R1000 to work, turning a 1:17.978 fastest lap in pursuit. Cory Burleson of the Cory Burleson/Alan Phillips team was right on his heels with a fastest lap of 1:18.819, running third overall and first in Middleweight, and Craig Montgomery of the Cory Burleson/Craig Montgomery pairing pulled a 1:18.482, running fourth overall and third in Heavyweight. The race leaders putting on a great show, with Cleland stretching his lead to 19.003 seconds over second place. When the checkers dropped at 6:40 pm, Cleland/Ortt took the overall and Heavyweight win, with Caruso/Young in second overall and Heavyweight. Burleson/Phillips took third overall and first in Middleweight.
