Clear Sailing On The Coast For Hayes, Who Wins Superbike Race 1 At Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca; Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha Teammate Beaubier Is Second
Monterey, CA – July 19, 2015 – It doesn’t matter if track conditions are dry, wet, or somewhere in-between, four-time and defending AMA Superbike Champion Josh Hayes always focuses on the task at hand, which is to win races. And, that he did, in MotoAmerica Superbike Race 1 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
Starting from the pole aboard his #1 Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha YZF-R1, Josh got a perfect jump off the line and quickly took his spot at the front of the field where he went to work clicking off consistent laps, which enabled him to lap the field all the way up to fourth place and also pull almost a 19-second gap to second place by the time he took the checkered flag.
That second-place finisher was the other Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha R1 Superbike, ridden by Josh’s fast teammate Cameron Beaubier. The northern California, who considers Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca his home track, tried valiantly to keep up with Josh’s furious pace, but it’s clear that Josh is not yet ready to give up his #1 competition number to his beloved stablemate.
“I’ve been around for a little while, and I’ve raced here in conditions similar to what we had in this morning’s race” Josh commented. “By turn four on the warmup lap, I knew that I wanted slick tires instead of rains. I had no questions about my decision. Plus, I’ve got a few AMA Championships under my belt, so I didn’t feel the pressure like Cam and Roger (Hayden) might have. We’re in Championship contention, and my crew says ‘go for it’ and win races, so that’s great for my confidence, as well. I’m really happy to get this win!”
Cameron said, “It was tough. I was struggling out there on the first few laps with the drying race line…and Josh was on it. He was on a whole other track, it seemed like. I’ve got to thank my guys, though, for getting my bike put back together after my tipover during Superpole yesterday. They always give me a perfect R1 to race, no matter what.”
Josh’s eighth victory of the season keeps him at the top of the Superbike points standings, and Cameron is still solidly in second place in the MotoAmerica Championship. MotoAmerica Superbike Race 2 will go green later on Sunday, at 4:45 PM PST.
