Jackson shatters records at HPR north course
Perfect yet hot conditions for MRA Round 4
Byers, CO – The MRA championship series returned to High Plains Raceway on July 11-12. Since HPR is usable as 4 different track layouts, this weekend the MRA decided to use the shorter north course configuration which removes some of the long back straight, the turn 4/5 combination, the turn 6 decreasing right turn, and the uphill right hander known as “high plains drifter”. Remaining with this configuration are 2 distinctive “S” sections each of which favors riders who have the skill & strength to change direction quickly.
Wyeth Jackson (MRA #145) brought out the big guns this weekend by enlisting the help of Danny Anderson of Roadrace Factory, coaching from Rob Christman (current MRA #1 plate holder), and the every present support of her husband Aaron Fisk. With such a team assembled, Jackson had some track records in her sights as well as the goal of solidifying point standings in a number of classes including Ladies of the Rockies.
Jackson’s first race of the weekend was Formula 40 GTU, which is gridded as a second wave to Formula 40 GTO. From the start it was clear that it would be Jackson, Adam Ayers and Mike Applehans battling for the lead. By lap 2 the Formula 40 GTU leaders were starting to carve their way through the back of the Formula 40 GTO racers on this relatively short course. Jackson got the better of Applehans by lap 3 and, while chasing down Ayers, set a new Formula 40 GTU track record at 1:17.613. Ayers had already amassed an insurmountable gap so Jackson had to settle for 2nd. Later that day in Middleweight Super Sport, Jackson came from the very back of the 17 racer grid to miss a podium position by one spot.
All weekend Jackson continued to consult, refine, and improve her Kawasaki ZX6R and her race techniques with continuous feedback from Anderson and Christman. On Sunday morning, Jackson qualified for RoR U with a 1:18.546 and prepared to go after the Ladies of the Rockies track record. Ladies of the Rockies is run as a second wave behind Modern Vintage GTU. Jackson got the hole shot and immediately started making her way through the back of the Modern Vintage GTU field. By lap 2, Jackson was up to 3rd overall on the track and started to bang on the doors of the likes of Christopher Coonshead and Shannon Moham. On lap 6, Jackson was able to get around Moham and later powered past Coonshead to take the overall win! Jackson indeed accomplished her goal of a new Ladies of the Rockies track record at 1:18.882. Jackson’s race effort is supported by Wyeth Homes Real Estate, G-Force Powersports, Pirelli Sol Performance, Woodcraft, Un!nk Printworks, Bell Helmets, Factory Trained Auto Repair, Rising Sun Cycles, Racers’ Edge Performance, Ninjatech Motorsports, SpeedMob, and Motonation.
Ladies of the Rockies had another tough battle for the remaining podium positions. Tiffany Maestas got off the line second but was immediately hounded by Trina Dawson and Patricia Gay. Early in the race, Dawson got around Maestas to take over 2nd, which Dawson maintained until the crossed flags. Meanwhile, Gay was determined to get that 2nd spot and charged past Dawson and a couple of the Modern Vintage GTU riders late in the race to claim 10th overall and 2nd in Ladies of the Rockies. At the end, it was Jackson, Gay, Dawson and Maestas. Trina Dawson is supported by Dave Rose/STM, Jeff Healy/406 Racing, and Michelin. Tiffany Maestas is backed by Vortex Racing.
Ryan Burke continued to dominate Race of the Rockies GTO with a win over Ricky Orlando and Chris Nami. Notably, Nami made his first Race of the Rockies GTO podium appearance of his career this weekend. Absent from the GTO box was Dan Turner, who had earlier set the Race of the Rockies qualifying track record at very fast 1:13.730 (Christman still holds the Race of the Rockies GTO race record at 1:12.836). Unfortunately Turner low sided at the top of the corkscrew on lap two. Dan was unhurt but unable to continue the race.
Evan Cordonier took the win for Race of the Rockies GTU beating an injured Shannon Moham. Wyeth Jackson returned to the podium Race of the Rockies GTU podium for the second time in a row, finishing 3rd.
Other track records that fell this weekend were 400 Production Cup by Jason Madama at a 1:27.514, Middleweight Supersport by Evan Cordonier at 1:16.307, Modern Vintage GTO by Luke Johnston at 1:17.382, Novice GTO by Tim Mayhew at 1:18.743, and Heavyweight Endurance by Shannon Moham at 1:17.029.
