Millennium Technologies/KWR Yamaha MotoAmerica Supersport racer and team owner Kyle Wyman suffered moderate injuries when he crashed while training on his bicycle Friday, June 19 in Tooele, Utah.
“I went straight here from Barber to hang out and train until the race next week at Miller Motorsports Park,” Wyman told Roadracingworld.com. “I was doing an hour and a half on my Shimano-equipped Felt road bicycle with a climb to the top of the canyon. It’s a good, steady 40-minute climb. From there I could coast all the way to the house we rented. So my ride was basically over at the point.”
Wyman said he later learned from his Garmin GPS that he was traveling at 43 mph on the decent when he rounded a bend and found two deer in the middle of the two-lane road.
“The one in the left lane saw me and darted into the woods to the left,” said Wyman. “The other one was on the centerline facing away from me. I was going to go to the right of it. Once the first one darted, the second one looked over and darted into my path at a 45 degree angle. I hit him pretty square. I went flying over the top of him.”
Wyman’s bicycle was destroyed, he said, and since he was riding alone he had to wait several minutes until some motorists stopped to help him.
“My left arm was bleeding pretty badly, and I had to get some towels on it,” said Wyman. “My phone was 30 feet away, but I found it and was able to call my dad to come get me.”
Wyman’s father took him to Mountain West Medical Center, in Tooele, Utah, where he was treated for road rash, abrasions, cuts and bruises.
“When I went over the bars,” said Wyman, “my legs just above the knees caught the bars. Right now, I can barely go up and down stairs because my legs are so bruised. But I’m very lucky and very grateful it wasn’t a car and I wasn’t hurt any worse. I hit my head, but I was wearing a helmet and it definitely did its job. I’ve crashed slower on a road race bike, so I feel very fortunate, very lucky. It could have been a lot worse.
“Now I’m just going to see if I can get stuff to heal and rehab my quads and see if I can ride next week. Luckily, it’s now and not like two days before the race.”
