Holden, Ungvarsky Dominate at Arroyo Seco Raceway

Both Jake Holden and amateur Sean Ungvarsky won three ASMA races this past Sunday, June 14 at Arroyo Seco Raceway, located near Deming, New Mexico.

In the first race of the day, the seven-lap Unlimited Superstock sponsored by Kurveygirl.com, series points leader David Hurtado was served his first loss by Holden. Hurtado and his Suzuki GSX-R1000 grabbed the hole shot and would lead the race until the back straight where Holden, also on a GSX-R1000 though apparently with a few more ponies, held the throttle wide open to seize the lead.

Thibault Few overtook Hurtado in similar style and stole the two spot on the second lap, thanks to his Kawasaki ZX-10R’s power, but Hurtado refused to let Few slip away and retook the two spot half a lap later when he was later on the brakes and slipped past Few through the inside of the left-sweeping Horseshoe.

Holden went on to pass the finish line first with Hurtado ten seconds behind and would claim both the fastest lap of the race and day with a blistering 1:06.970; Hurtado’s fastest was a 1:09.268 and for Few, finishing in third place, a 1:09 flat.

The next open race was the Evan Steel Performance Formula Arroyo race. The three fastest guys were on the front row from Saturday’s qualifying session with Holden on pole and Few and Hurtado lined up beside him. This time Few was the first in motion once the green flag was raised, but Holden inched past due to Few’s front tire that refused to stay grounded.

Hurtado got a horrible start, ending the first turn in 6th place. By the second lap, Hurtado passed Greg Talbot and his Yamaha YZF-R6 for the three spot on the back straight, but when Few low-sided in the 111R on lap six, Talbot was given another chance at a place on the podium for the first time this series. However, Talbot finished just behind third-place finisher Sebastian Musewicz and his Kawasaki ZX-6R, who rallied with a series of lightning-quick laps to overtake Talbot late in the race. On the final lap, Talbot’s attempt to reclaim his position was thwarted when his engine blew as he stormed down the back straight.

For the amateur class, 19-year-old Ungvarsky and his Kawasaki ZX-6R returned to win each of the three races he entered, from start to finish, including the 12-lap premier race Formula Amateur sponsored by Speedcell.

Two rounds ago, Ungvarsky’s last appearance, series points leader Dan Dickerman and his Yamaha YZF-R6 topped Ungvarsky by 2.4 seconds, with help from lap traffic that got in Ungvarsky’s way the very last lap of the race. This time around, however, Dickerman could not better his rival’s pace and rode wide in the Carousel during the second lap, surrendering the two spot to Tim Byma and his Suzuki GSX-R600 and rejoining the track behind Roberto Reynoso and his Honda CBR-1000RR, who moved up to the three spot. But Dickerman put his head down and pushed to overtake Reynoso during the fourth lap and retake the two spot from Byma during the seventh lap, crossing the finished line some seven seconds behind race winner Ungvarsky.

Ungvarsky claimed the fastest lap of the race with a 1:12.483, compared to Dickerman’s 1:12.959 and Byma’s 1:14.255. With a 1:11.185 in the Unlimited Superstock sponsored by Kurveygirl.com, Ungvarsky shaved nearly a second off his fastest lap time from the last time he raced in this configuration two months ago.

The fifth round of ASMA racing at Arroyo Seco Raceway will resume September 13.
