Team Caruso/Young and Pretty Hate Machine On Top At Hallett With CMRA
The Joseph Caruso/Brandon Young team, took the overall Team 60 win while the Pretty Hate Machine team of Jesse Davis, Alan Phillips, and David Tiede brought home the win in 6-Hour Ultra-Lightweight Endurance this past Saturday, May 16, at the First Annual Westby Classic. The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) began its fourth round of the season on Saturday with a 6-Hour Ultra-Lightweight Endurance, Lightweight Sprints, and Team 60 race, bringing over 10 hours of racing action to Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Hallett, Oklahoma. Humid weather with temperatures in the 80’s and a high chance of rain greeted competitors as the lap times stayed fast on the 1.8 mile, 11-turn course.
The Lightweight Sprint grids kicked off Saturday’s racing action, and were a great warm up for the 6-Hour Ultra-Lightweight Endurance and its combined grid of 28 teams, with 500 Classic, 500 Superstock, Ultra Lightweight GP, and E Superstock Endurance represented.
The lights went out and the Pretty Hate Machine team, riding a Honda CBR500R, took the early lead, and held onto it. The Unobtanium Racing team of Braeden Ortt, John Redford, and Gavin Williams aboard a Kawasaki 300R, tangled with Team Von Hertell/Harris Hill and Faltless Racing, both on Honda CBR500R’s, for second. When the checkers dropped at 4:45, Pretty Hate Machine crossed the line for the overall and 500 Superstock Endurance win, completing 230 laps. Team Von Hertell/Harris Hill’s riders Brandon Altmeyer, John Bell, John Branch, Keith Hertell, and Nick Montonaro took second overall and in 500 Superstock Endurance. The Faltless Racing team of Robert Bradlaw, Danny Dominguez, Bill Erzal, Eric Falt, and Ted Phillips crossed the line third overall and first in 500 Classic Endurance. David Tiede, team owner of Pretty Hate Machine said, “The Pretty Hate Machine CBR500R did the job for us Saturday at Hallett. Solid stints by Jesse Davis and Alan Philips kept us in the top five all six hours, and our Bridgestone rear and VP race fuel got the job done late in the race. We know that two of our top competitors had some bad luck out there, but we expect them to be back strong at the next round and to keep us honest all year. Thanks to Lone Star Track Days for the track time, Davis Auto and Cycle for the build and paint, Crazy Jacks for the Bridgestones, Bridgestone for the great Lightweight contingency program, John at South Central Race Center for the VP Race Fuel, Mitch at BD Racing for the Vesrah brake pads, and Sharkskinz for the bodywork.”
The final race of the day was the Dunlop/Race Tire Service Team 60 race, with a healthy grid of 32 teams. The popular LeMans-style start was used to start the 32 team grid.
The exciting action started with Cory Burleson, of the Burleson/Phillips team getting the holeshot from row 20, and holding the lead for four laps. Brandon Cleland, of the Cleland/Ortt pairing, had an issue starting his bike, and launched from the back of the grid, passing the entire field and overtaking Burleson on lap four. Cleland then turned the fastest lap of the race (and weekend) of 1:16.991 on Lap 5, leading the overall and in Middleweight. Half a lap later, Cleland had contact with another rider, bringing out the red flag and a race stoppage.
The second Le Mans for the restart saw Brandon Young of the Joseph Caruso/Brandon Young pairing off the line for the lead, putting his head down for a 1:19.027 fastest lap. The Scott Buckley/Craig Montgomery team was right on their heels with a fastest lap of 1:20.052, running second overall and in Heavyweight, and the Kyle Ohnsorg/Will Shupak pairing pulled a 1:21.692, running third overall and first in Middleweight. The race leaders diced it up, putting on a great show, and when the checkers dropped at 6 pm, Caruso/Young took the overall and Heavyweight win, with Buckley/Montgomery in second overall and Heavyweight. Ohnsorg/Shupak took third overall and first in Middleweight.
Joseph Caruso, team captain of Caruso/Young said, “Initially, the plan was for me to go out and try to hold station, preferably in the top three until midway when Young, our faster rider, would takeover. I managed to stay in third, however, the crash basically nullified the first stint. Young started the second half from pole and lead the whole way so he deserves the credit for riding a great second stint. We’re both thankful for the win and thankful that Cleland, from initial reports, seems to be for the most part OK.”
