Burleson, Caruso Take Top Spots In Saturday’s CMRA Spring Shootout

Cory Burleson and Joseph Caruso took home the wins in Middleweight Expert and Heavyweight Expert at CMRA’s first ever Spring Shootout at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson, Texas, this past Saturday, April 25.

Crazy weather overnight dumped heavy rain, while record high winds brought hail and a tornado within two miles of the track, making Saturday morning’s track conditions very slick with dirt and debris on the edges. The sun and a light breeze helped dry the track, and conditions greatly improved by race time.

Burleson came off a five-year hiatus to grab the win in Middleweight Expert on his Dunlop-shod GSX-R600 and turned the fastest lap of the day in the process, running a 1:20.096. Burleson was a known CMRA fast guy and also won the AMA Horizon Award in 2006.

Burleson shared this about his time away from racing and his return,”I took time off to be with my family and raise my boys. They’re old enough to ride now, and wanted to come out this weekend and race in Jr Motard. So I got this bike, picked it up this morning on the way here, and came out to race with them.”

Caruso pulled the win in Heavyweight Expert with his Pirelli-shod BMW S1000RR, grabbing the lead in a nail-biter of a last lap within 100 yards of the checkers, as he edged KTM RC8-mounted Brandon Young and held off Jordan Pence riding hard on his Kawasaki ZX-6R.

Caruso shared this about his win, “That was a crazy lap, and a good race. The level of competition was challenging and my bike ran well, thanks to Brandon McLean from Metric Garage and Jimmy Cambora from RaceworX suspension. I’m looking forward to Hallett.”

Cleland Takes Top Spots In Sunday’s CMRA Spring Shootout

Brandon Cleland took home the wins in Middleweight Expert and Heavyweight Expert at CMRA’s first ever Spring Shootout at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson, Texas, this past Sunday, April 26.

Sunshine with some humidity and quickly rising temperatures made for fast times on the counter-clockwise1.7-mile course, a great improvement over the day before.

Cleland rode two different bikes to grab the wins. In the first race of the day, Heavyweight Expert and Novice, Cleland boarded his Pirelli-shod Kawasaki ZX-10R and threw down the fastest lap of the weekend, turning a 1:15.440 on lap 3. He held that pace for the remaining 15 laps of the race, finishing 59.121 seconds ahead of second place.

Clouds rolled in and a thunderstorm could be seen approaching as the third race of the day took the warm up lap and gridded up.

In race three, Middleweight Expert and Novice, Cleland was on his Pirelli-shod Yamaha YZF-R6. He held a blistering pace for the entire 18 lap race, turning a fastest lap of the race on lap 14 with a 1:16.485 and taking the checkers 29.071 seconds ahead of second place.

A lightning strike 3.1 miles from the track put a brief weather hold on the event right after race three, but racing was able to continue. Races four and five were shortened by half, and race six was red-flagged after three laps due to lightning.
