Show Us Your Rides, Part 30: Cam Morehead

© 2015, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.

This off-season we’re running a series showing your motorcycles. Not just your road racing bikes, but your streetbikes, motocross bikes, dirt bikes, pit bikes, mini bikes, trials bikes, land-speed bikes, drag bikes, speedway bikes, whatever you’ve got. If you have more than one bike, send photos of them all–alone or with you! Send in-focus bike photos (as jpeg files) along with the make, model and year of each bike and your name, city and state, plus the name of the photographer, to [email protected]. By sending us the photos, you are certifying that you own the rights to the photos and are giving us permission to feature them on roadracingworld.com. They may be posted on roadracingworld.com during slow news days.

Seen here in our 30th installment are photos sent in by WERA racer Cam Morehead, age 39, from Westminster, South Carolina. “I have probably owned 50 bikes since 1979,” writes Morehead, who goes on to list the ones he still has, including a 1974 Honda QA50 that he’s had since 1979, when he was about five years old. Other bikes in his collection include a 2013 Ducati Multistrada 1200, a 2003 Yamaha YZF-R6, a Honda NSR50, a 2000 Honda XR50, a 2003 Honda XR70, a 2011 Kawasaki KLX140L, a 2006 Yamaha 125LE, a 2005 Yamaha YZF250F, a 2003 Yamaha Raptor 90, a 2005 Kawasaki Mule and a fleet of retired racebikes, including a 1999 Kawasaki ZX-6R, another 2003 Yamaha YZF-R6, a 2003 Derbi GPR50 mini road racer, a 2003 Metrakit 50 mini road racer, a 2004 KTM 450 SMR, a 2003 Yamaha YZ85 mini road racer, a 2006 Kawasaki KX65 mini road racer, a 2007 Honda CR85 mini road racer, four 2009 Honda CRF100 mini road racers and a 2011 Husqvarna 630 SMS.

If it seems like Morehead’s fleet includes a lot of mini road racers, that’s no surprise. He started and ran a mini road racing organization (based at the Middle Georgia Kart Track, also known as the Herrin Compound, in Dublin, Georgia) called CAMMRA, which stands for Cam’s Mini Roadracing Association. According to Morehead, due to the current demands of his job handling materials for construction projects at the Oconee Nuclear Station on Lake Keowee, he’s turned the CAMMRA organization over to Kim Herrin, and he’s backed away from his sideline of building spoke-wheels for SuperMoto bikes and selling tires and bikes through his company M&M Racing.

“If I am not at work, I am on the lake with my wife and daughter or riding. I bought the Ducati just to ride to work because I wasn’t able to ride, working so many hours…” According to Morehead, his job sometimes requires him to put in over 70 hours a week.

But despite that workload, Morehead–who in recent years has also served as a mechanic on an AMA Pro team–continues to mentor and wrench for young racer Jackson Blackmon. And, Morehead admits, “I hope to do some more track days for 2015.”
