Allerton takes ‘never say die’ attitude into final round of the Swann Superbike Series

18 November 2014: Melbourne, Victoria :

NextGen Motorsport pilot Glenn Allerton will head to the final round of the Swann Superbike Series this weekend at his home track – Sydney Motorsport Park, adopting a ‘never say die’ attitude.

After another satisfying outing at round five of the series at Wakefield Park, Allerton has proven that he plans to stick it to the Honda Racing Team boys until the very end, and has not given up on his championship hopes just yet.

Allerton shared his excitement about heading to the final round of the series this weekend, and says he’s expecting big things at the grand finale.

“Obviously being my home round, I’m really excited to be racing this weekend at Eastern Creek,” he said.

“It’s my favorite circuit and I have a lot of my family and friends coming, but at the same time it does create a lot of pressure –it’s the final round of the year and racing is a fickle sport, so you’re only as good as your last race.

“The Honda guys have all done a really great job this year – there’s a great rivalry between myself and (Wayne) Maxwell, and we have battled at the pinnacle of the sport for a long time.

“All the Honda guys look pretty similar out on the track, and it’s hard to tell who’s who, but if they’re on a red bike, I definitely want to beat them (laughs).”

Allerton is out to have some fun this weekend, but is adamant that in a sport where anything can happen, he is still a chance to finish on top of the series’ podium.

“This weekend, I’m just going to go out and try and have some fun on my BMW, and I know that the NextGen Motorsports team will give me a bike that will do all the right things in the corners.

“We have plenty of horsepower in our BMW, and I think we’ll be in for a really strong event.

“The team and I have all spoken about where we could end up, and the possibility is still there that we could win the championship. It would take a huge mistake by Maxwell to lose it from here, but it is motorsport and anything could happen.”

With a successful 2014 Swann Superbike Series campaign already in the books, we took the opportunity to get Allerton’s thoughts on the 2014 series to date, and what fans can expect from the grand finale.

“I think I’ve had a great year. A lot of people wouldn’t realise that I have had problems physically trying to ride the bike with my knee injury, but to still be in contention for a championship at this stage is a pretty great achievement,” he said.

“The best thing about this year, has been having everyone in the one spot.

“The hype going into the first round was awesome, everyone has merged into the ASC this year, and for me I really just want to see everyone racing in the one championship.

“The Superbike racing this weekend is going to be a cracker, and I don’t think you’re going to get much better in terms of road racing in this country.

“There are twelve guys who could potentially win on Sunday, and the championship is still yet to be decided. Road racing in Australia is still alive and well and very competitive, so I think fans will be in for a pretty big event this weekend.”
