BEI Racing/Dunlop Development Wins Overall, Village Idiots Take Mediumweight Class Championship In U.S. National Endurance Series

The Dunlop-shod, Suzuki GSXR-1000 mounted BEI Racing/Dunlop Development team of Dustin Dominguez, Sean Dwyer, and Billy Ethridge took the overall series win while the Village Idiots team of Brandon Cleland, Chris Headley, John Orchard, and Garet Tomlinson took the Mediumweight Class Championship with their Yamaha YZF-R6 in the final round of the US National Endurance Series presented by Lucas Oil at Barber Motorsports Park on Thursday, October 26, 2014, kicking off the Grand National Finals weekend for WERA.

The U.S. National Endurance Series was a joint venture this year as CMRA and WERA joined forces for the four rounds series, giving competitors a chance to race at different tracks and win a bonus purse at the end of the final round.

Twenty eight teams gridded up for Thursday’s race, with CMRA being represented by 11 teams. CMRA’s Village Idiots were in 2nd overall in points, a mere 10 behind the champion WERA team, BEI Racing/Dunlop Development, when the green flag dropped. The Texas teams leapt into the mix, immediately taking up spots in the top three in all the classes, and vying for the top ten overall. For many of the CMRA racers, this was their first time running at Barber, and their lap times continued to drop. As the Village Idiots tangled with BEI/Hardball Racing, CMRA’s Hold Fast and LSTD II went after WERA’s Apex Manufacturing, grabbing third and fourth. CMRA Team EDS riders David Branyon, Darrell Ricks Jr, Mike Sweeney, and Shane Zelm on a Suzuki SV650, shot up into the top ten, taking the lead in lightweight, while the two-woman CMRA team of G-Baby Racing dispatched WERA’s Team Yo! and Navy SeaBee Team 670 to take over third in lightweight.

The next three hours showed the CMRA teams riding consistently and well, moving up through the ranks, when a red flag came out two minutes into hour four. As the field re-gridded for the restart, the final hour turned into a pit stop timing and sprint battle. WERA’s Army of Darkness, aboard their BMW S1000RR, retook the lead and held it to the checkers, winning the overall and first in Heavyweight. The two BEI teams took second and third overall and in Heavyweight. The Village Idiots finished fourth overall and first in Mediumweight, with Hold Fast finishing third in Mediumweight and seventh overall.

In the final tally of points for the overall U.S. National Endurance Series presented by Lucas Oil’s top ten, CMRA teams took seven of the top spots. In individual class championships, CMRA swept Mediumweight, grabbed five of the six top spots in Lightweight, and took four of the six places in Heavyweight.

CMRA and USNE would like to thank the sponsors of the U.S. National Endurance Series for this season: Lucas Oil for supporting the series with a bonus purse contribution, M4 Exhaust Products for sponsoring the Mediumweight class, awarding product and a purse contribution, Saddlemen for product awards the overall top three and a purse contribution, and Driven for sponsoring Heavyweight with product awards.
