Village Idiots win CMRA 6 hour Endurance at Motorsport Ranch Cresson

The Village Idiots (Brandon Cleland, Chris Headley, John Orchard, Garet Tomlinson) claim the CMRA 6hr endurance overall victory aboard their Raceworx/Dunlop/RES R6 at Motorsport Ranch Cresson on Saturday August 23rd, 2014.

Scorching temperatures set the stage for a grueling 6 hour endurance race. Racing in Texas, in general, is HOT but endurance racing in August is a recipe for 100 degree temperatures, cooling issues of man and machine, as well as a Cresson race track infamously known for its greasy surface. Village Idiots managed to overcome all the obstacles
and widen the gap on their lead in the overall CMRA endurance points standings.

Chris Headley, the longest standing Village Idiot, would take the green flag for the team. Headley jumped out to a great start and settled into the third position. The front group would remain tight for the first thirty minutes then eventually begin to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. As the competition began to fade toward the forty-five minute mark, Headley continued to shine and would find himself in the number one position before the end of his stint. Headley ran the Raceworx/Dunlop/RES R6 sixty seven laps, burring through all 7 gallons worth of fuel before handing the bike off to Brandon Cleland.

After the pit stop, the Village Idiots entered back on track in the third position. Cleland put his head down and went to work. The Village Idiots opted with a two tire strategy leaving Cleland to make-do with what was left over from Headley’s stint. Cleland’s stint was not marked by the fastest times, but his consistency was key in regaining the lead on lap 98 of 267. “I did everything I could to ride a mistake free stint,” said Cleland. “The surface made it difficult to
push, which can be frustrating, but I’ve done enough of these (endurance races) to know that it isn’t about the fastest lap. It’s about putting together a solid stint.” On lap 125 Cleland decided it was time to pit and send “Monkey Boy” Garet Tomlinson out on a new Dunlop rear tire.

The Village Idiots pit crew has always played a crucial role in their race success. Harry Tomlinson and Marian Orchard were on point as usual with this fuel stop and tire change enabling the Village Idiots to mount back up just seconds behind the new race leader.

It took Garet Tomlinson no time at all to put the new Dunlop slick to good use. Garet set the fastest lap of the race at 1:17.155 on just his fifth lap out with a forty-five pound fuel load. The young-gun Garet Tomlinson continued to put in a string of 1:17 lap times and made the pass for the lead. His dominating performance and the Village Idiots pit strategy allowed the team to gain an astonishing two lap lead over the field with two hours to go. Garet, without a doubt, left
a lasting mark on the competition in what seemed like a statement performance. Garet signaled to pit after an hour and twenty-five minute stint and the team would prepare for a fuel stop and to send John Orchard out on track.

John Orchard, CMRA President, has been battling injuries over the last couple months and was in debate on how long he could manage. The team’s doubts were quickly diminished as Orchard went out and rode a flawless 53 lap stint. In the process, Orchard managed to put the Village Idiots an additional lap up on the field leaving the Idiots
with a three lap lead before calling it a ride.

With just twenty minutes to go, the Village Idiots sent Chris Headley back out to finish what he started. Headley rode the remaining stint without comlications which allowed the Idiots to finish 1st in class and 1st Overall.

“It feels so good to reclaim the top spot of the podium. Our team works extremely hard in all aspects to come out here and be the best and we did just that,” commented Cleland.

The Village Idiots enter the next round with a 272 point lead over second place in the CMRA overall endurance standings. The Village Idiots will be competing in the next round at Motorsport Ranch Houston on September 20th, 2014. For a complete schedule and points standings visit www.cmraracing.com
