Record Shattering MRA Round 3 at Pueblo Motorsports Park on July 21st & 22nd

Round 3 at Pueblo Motorsports Park (PMP_ brought sizzling temperatures and clear sunny skies. Conditions were ideal for a record shattering weekend. With temperatures in the high 90’s and track temps nearing 150 degrees, the asphalt was optimal for those who could master the technical challenges of Pueblo Motorsports Park. The MRA had another incredible turnout of over 150 riders, and multiple classes exceeding 40 bike grids. The 2.2 mile course offers 10 grip twisting turns, through gut sinking dips of drastic elevation changes. PMP is one of Colorado’s fast flowing tracks, where age and treachery seemed to dominate youth and exuberance this go around.

Saturdays temperatures and sticky Dunlop tires brought Pete Tabor back to the podium. Tabor clinched 3 victories in Middleweight, Heavyweight, and Open Supersport crushing his prior seasons best lap by nearly 3 seconds. In doing so Tabor also set the Middleweight Supersport class record with a 1:34.111 on his Dunlop shod Kawasaki ZX-6. In the Open Supersport class Tabor ran his personal best for the day setting the class record with a 1:31.704 on his Grand Prix Motorsports Kawasaki ZX-10.

Saturday brought spectacular battles within the production and novice classes. Joeseph Washburn and Jason Madama were on fire leaving rubber all the way down the front straight. With fearlessness and heavy right hand, both rider crushed the existing class records for the production 300 and 500 classes. Joe Washburn skirted the asphalt and ran a personal best clicking in a class record 1:50.360 on his Pirelli shod Kawasaki 300. Jason “Hammer” Madama smashed his previous personal best, and set the 500 production cup class record with a 1:46.291. John Borst joined the fury taking home a win in Novice GTU class and setting a new class record with a 1:37.435. Eric Becker lit the fire within his Triumph 675, and clocked in with a 1:37.391 to secure the Novice GTO lap record.

Sunday brought a handful of challenges for many riders. The morning session was riddled with numerous crashes from riders pushing it to the edge. The average pace was substantially quicker than the years prior. Rob Christman came out of the gate with a rubber trail streaking behind his rear tire on entry and exit of every turn. Christman tamed his rabid horse shoed with Pirelli rubber, and was able to put his Suzuki GSXR 1000 at the top of the podium in Open Superbike with a scorching 1:29.200. In doing so he set a new class record and claimed the overall track record. Christman brought home another win in the Formula 40 Open class, once again setting another class record with a 1:31.068.

The MRA’s Premier class, Race of the Rockies, brought the crowd to its feet. The front runners demonstrated their mastery of the Pueblo road course. With reduced visibility and a looming dust/rainstorm, Dan Turner, Rob Christman and Pete Tabor were battling for the lead. Christman suffered a mechanical causing his times to slowly slip. Dan Turner took advantage and to took the final pass on Christman. Tabor motored away for his first ROR Open class win this season on his Kawasaki ZX-10, keeping him close in the hunt for the MRA #1 plate.

Shannon Moham walloped the Race of the Rockies U field on his Yamaha – R6 and brought home the win by a substantial gap. Moham cranked up the pace at Pueblo, and was unbeatable in nearly every class he competed in. Faced with mechanical failures and a blown motor, Moham took a phenomenal 8 first place finishes and 3 second place finishes. Not only did he steal away the podium, but set and addition 5 class lap records with his best being a 1:32.991 in Middleweight Superbike

The next round of the MRA is right around the corner. The Race of the Rockies Championship series continues with Round 4, July 19th and 20th at Pikes Peak International Raceway. Race tickets are just $10 at the gate and kids under 12 get in free; stop by any Colorado motorcycle dealership to pick up a 2 for 1 gate entry. For 2014 the MRA is honoring our Armed Forces and first responders, just present an ID, and get in free to all MRA races. MRA Racer Shannon Moham Brings Home Eight Race Wins and Sets 5 Class Track Records

Pueblo Motorsports Park in Pueblo, Colorado was the place to be this past weekend for the MRA’s round 3. Temperatures were high at the track but it was MRA racer Shannon Moham that was on fire the entire weekend. Moham’s race weekend didn’t start out how he planned, however. During his first practice on Saturday morning, he came in on the crash cart with a mechanical issue with his R6 motor. Thankful for his stock back-up R6, Moham decided to add 2 races to his already full day of racing. Moham won his first race, Lightweight GP, on his SV, setting a new Class Track Record. He then went out on his “B” bike and took second in Middleweight Supersport and Heavyweight Supersport.. You’d think that would have been enough for the day for any racer, but Moham, also known as “Marathon Man”, still had two 30 minute endurance races to go. Number 945 brought home 2 more wins in Lightweight and Heavyweight Endurance, as well as setting 2 more Class Track Records. The end of Saturday’s race day brought no rest for the weary. Moham swapped R6 motors to prepare for the following day’s full schedule and called it a night.

Sunday proved to be yet another scorcher both on and off the track! Moham had 5 races and hit the track with a vengeance. Starting out with Middleweight Superbike, Moham took the win again on his R6, with his spare motor mind you, and set another Class Track Record. Modern Vintage GTU proved to bring home another win and his fifth Class Track Record of the weekend. Moham didn’t stop there. After lunch, he proceeded to win the MRA’s premier class of the weekend, Race of the Rockies GTU! Moham finished up his day with 2 more Race Wins in Supertwins GTU and Heavyweight Superbike! That brought Moham to a total of Eight Race Wins and Five Class Track Records! Not a bad weekend at all.

Moham had this to say about his stellar weekend, “I cannot say enough about our MRA family. Having had a mechanical issue with my R6 during the first practice of the race weekend definitely threw a wrench in my game plan. But I have the most amazing friends and fellow racers that came and helped me after the race day was done and we were able to swap motors that night. This weekend would not have been possible without those that came and helped and I want to especially thank Ray Gaimara and Tim Young for the help”. “I also want to thank Dunlop for once again providing the greatest tire out there. Pueblo is a rough track and it gets HOT. Dunlop tires held up the entire weekend and got me on the podium race after race. Thank you to Race Tech for my amazing suspension. I had some issues after the second round at HPR and they sent me what I needed to make the changes and I’d say that after 8 race wins, we got it right”. Moham went on to say, “A huge thank you to all of my sponsors for always supporting me and my race program. I wouldn’t be where I am without them”. “And I can’t say enough about our new toy hauler, the 2015 Evergreen Amped 32GS. The room we now have makes our race weekend run so smooth and knowing that my wife, kids and dogs are comfortable and happy at the racetrack helps me be successful in my race program”!
