Prince Takes Moto West Grand Prix Formula One Win At Buttonwillow

Bryce Prince took a trio of wins, including the victory in the Formula One main event, as Moto West Grand Prix held its first race at Buttonwillow Raceway Park on Saturday and Sunday, June 14-15.

Riding his Dunlop-shod Tuned Racing Yamaha YZF-R6, Prince laid down a 1:47.968 lap in increasingly strong winds and dust en route to a 7.682-second margin over CM Motorsports Chad Lewin’s Yamaha YZF-R6. Tuned Racing teammate Jason Aguilar brought his Yamaha YZF-R6 home in third.

Prince and Lewin went into the first turn of the 10-lap, 30-mile race side-by-side, with Lewin coming out in the lead. Prince finished the first lap in third, behind the Suzuki GSX-R1000 of Corey Sarros. But by the end of the second lap, Prince had disposed of both Sarros and Lewin, and Aguilar was on the move.

Aguilar struggled with the start and the first lap, dropping more than two seconds to the leaders on the first circuit of the 3.0-mile course configuration. But his second lap was a 1:48.518, the second-best lap of the day. It took Aguilar half the race to pass Sarros, but once past, he quickly hunted down Lewin. Aguilar made a last-lap. last corner lunge underneath Lewin, but the CM Motorsports rider responded and edged Aguilar at the line.

Prince also won the Open Superbike and 600cc Superbike races. Lewin took second in 600cc Superbike and fourth in 600cc Superstock. Aguilar was credited with a fourth in Open Superstock and a fifth in 600cc Superstock after a dramatic end to the day. Aguilar crashed out of the lead of the Open Superstock race, just before team owner Mike Pond – racing in the 750cc Superstock class, which ran along with Open Superstock – crashed in the same corner. The team got Aguilar’s bike back together for 600cc Superstock, but conditions were so bad that Aguilar pulled out of the race after one lap.

Rick Oliver turned up for his first-ever motorcycle road race at the age of 70 on a Suzuki SV650. As he was the only entrant in Novice Lightweight, Oliver started his career by taking a win.

Tuned Racing’s Bryce Prince Dominates MWGP at Buttonwillow

Bryce Prince dominated all 3 of his races to take over the #1 position in the Overall Championship for Moto West Grand Prix. This was Moto West Grand Prix’s first race away from Willow Springs. Buttonwillow is just a few minutes from Bryce’s house, and he immediately made himself at home with a Sunday morning qualifying time that was over 1 second faster than his next closest competitor. The races proved to be a bit more competitive.

Bryce’s first race of the day was 600 Superbike. Prince did not get a great start but worked his way into the lead by the end of the first lap and rode to the win. Bryce ran the fastest lap of the weekend, a 1:47.128, to secure the win. “I really wanted the track record, but the track was just too hot, and causing the tires to slide due to the heat, so I backed off a little to take the win.” Bryce stated after the race. In Open Superbike, Bryce battled for the win, making a spectacular inside pass in the Bus Stop turn that drew gasps from the crowd. Tuned Racing teammate, Mike Pond, finished 3rd in 750 Superbike.

The Formula 1 race had Prince starting on Pole, with Jason Aguilar starting fifth, due to some mechanical issues in Saturday qualifying practice. Prince was 3rd at the first turn, with Aguilar behind in 5th Place. On the second lap, Prince worked his way into the lead Aguilar moving up to 4th. As the race progressed, Prince was able to crate a gap. Aguilar slowly reeled in 3rd and then started after 2nd. On the final lap, Aguilar was right behind the 2nd place rider, and showed him a wheel in Turn 1. On the final turn, Jason dove inside for the pass. The other rider countered to reclaim the inside, and both riders drove to the finish line together for a photo finish with Aguilar getting nipped by inches at the finish.

In Open Superstock, Jason Aguilar got a great start to grab the lead into Turn 1 over the 1000cc literbikes. On Lap 2, Jason was pushing hard to create a gap to hold off the litrebikes down the straightaway when he tucked the front going into Turn 1. Mike Pond, who was running in the 750 Superstock class, went down in the same turn, bringing out the red flag with both riders unable to continue. The team went to work on Jason’s bike to prepare him for the final race, 600 Superstock. With only one race in between Open Superstock and 600 Superstock, the Team had 15 minutes to wash the bike, get it back on the tire warmers, replace bodywork and windscreen, replace handlebars, controls, rearsets and footpegs. They made it and Jason gridded up for the race. By now the conditions on track had deteriorated to the point that Aguilar, and a couple other riders, all pulled off track after the first lap to save their equipment for another day. “I didn’t want to risk not having my bike ready for Barber. In one of the corners, tumbleweeds were blowing across the track. In another turn, there were pieces of bodywork blowing across the track. I just decided it was safer to come in.” explained Aguilar. While it was a disappointing conclusion to the day, Jason’s 1:48.518 in Formula 1, was a personal best, and the second fastest time of the weekend behind teammate Bryce Prince.
