AMA Sanctioned
ASRA Team Challenge Series Presented by Michelin Tire
May 17, 2014
Blackhawk Farms Raceway
South Beloit, IL
South Beloit, IL – The third round of the AMA sanctioned ASRA Team Challenge presented by Michelin Tire had a different feel as the teams took to the track for this year’s 75-lap contest. Missing from this event was Jason Farrell, winner of the last three Team Challenge events at Blackhawk Farms Raceway, so the door was wide open for some new names to stand atop the Overall Podium and the competitors wasted no time in trying to fill the vacancy. From the start of the second lap, Pool Boy Racing moved their Yamaha YZF-R6 to the front and the lead for the next 20 laps before Wolfpack/TSE moved into the lead on lap 21. Not to be denied, Pool Boy passed the Wolfpack/TSE BMW 1000 on lap 37 and held the lead until the checkered flag on lap 75. Southeast Sales moved their Kawasaki ZX10 into second Overall and the GTO lead on lap 38 and held on to the position to the end. The Yamaha R6 of Blockhead Brigade gained the final podium position for Overall and the runner up spot for GTU. Five-time series champion Grease Monkey Racing finished in 20th position and was able to hang on to the Overall point lead for the series.
Final finishing order for the GTO class was Southeast Sales, Martinez Motorsports on another Kawasaki ZX10 in second and the Jinba Ittai Yamaha R6 from Fairview, NC rounding out the top three for the class. By virtue of their runner-up finish, the Martinez Motorsports team takes the point lead in GTO away from Grease Monkey by 2-points after the first three rounds
As for the GTU class, it was Pool Boy Racing with the win, followed by Blockhead Brigade in second position and Pure Action Sports from Fredericksburg, VA making the long trek to secure third position. The class championship leader RnR Repsol finished fourth and carries a 7-point lead into the next round.
The surprise of the 2014 season is the battle for the GTL Championship between the top three teams in the class. The Wisconsin based BP Performance team, formerly known as Team Five-Six-Five, took advantage of two blend line infractions by the Mavros & Boy Ducati to take the win by 1-lap over the Florida based Marvos team. With solid laps and 1-stop strategy, the Faceplant/Ducati Team finished in third position to keep the team in the hunt for the championship. With BP Performance and Mavros tied at 91 points, the Faceplant/Ducati at 82 points is well within reach of the leaders with 5 rounds remaining
