Continental Tire was founded in 1871 and was a leader in motorcycle, bicycle, and automotive tire development and innovation. The company originated the first water-dispersing grooved tire (in 1904) and, during the 1970s, made the most popular brand of bias ply tires in the USA. They were involved in many forms of racing and steadily took over other tire manufacturers as well as automotive component supply companies.

Continental’s market share of motorcycle tires in the USA collapsed from 50% to 4% in a matter of years. No doubt there was a sting of pride but, from a business perspective, the loss was largely irrelevant because of Continental’s diversification into other types of tires, as well as becoming a huge manufacturer of automotive electronics.

Currently, Continental is the fourth-largest manufacturer of tires in the world; the third-largest automotive parts and electronics manufacturer; has around 200,000 employees worldwide; and has gross revenue that is about 250% of, say, Yamaha. About 14 years ago a small group inside Continental decided to get a serious about motorcycle tires again…

Roadracing World Wild Card Editor/racer/racebike-builder Sam Fleming goes to the Continental Hannover proving ground in Austria to test the latest ContiAttack tires, the SM 2 series, which he found to be “an excellent choice for any lightweight bike and rider combination that won’t be generating the forces of high speed supersport bikes.” Read the rest of Fleming’s review in the latest issue of Roadracing World!
