Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca has scheduled an FIM Superbike World Championship event on July 11-13, and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course has scheduled a two-day AMA Pro Road Race event on the same weekend. Theoretically, both events could happen on the same weekend, but the situation would likely prevent AMA Pro Racing classes from competing at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in 2014 and the overall success of both events would be at risk. There is a resolution in the works, however, according to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca CEO/GM Gill Campbell. “We are working to resolve the situation, and apparently I should know by the end of this week,” Campbell told Roadracingworld.com Monday. “I have every confidence we’ll get it resolved. I don’t want to split things up. It’s complex for everybody to change something around once you’ve got it established. I do understand that, but hopefully we can get it resolved so it’s a win-win for everybody.” Campbell did not want to speculate on how the conflict might be resolved. One possible solution would be for Mid-Ohio to swap weekends between its AMA Pro Road Race event and its AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days by moving the AMA Pro Road Race to July 19-20 and AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days to July 11-13. But that is no simple fix as Mid-Ohio has already started promoting and selling tickets for both events. Tickets to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca’s World Superbike event do not go on sale until January 2014. If a resolution to the conflict can be resolved it would open the door for AMA Pro Racing classes to run in support of the World Superbike event at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, something the event and the struggling series both need to succeed. “That’s been my plan all along, to have AMA [Pro Racing] back,” said Campbell. “We’ve got, what, over a 20-year history of running AMA. My loyalty, as you know, is to feature the best of American racing and the best of European racing, and this is probably it. I’m obviously looking at other options at this point in time, but that would be my first choice.”
