The Progressive International Motorcycle Show at the Long Beach Convention Center, in Long Beach, California, has begun, and there’s lots for motorcyclist enthusiasts to see and do. Among the motorcycle manufacturers showcasing their 2014 model lineups are: BMW, BRP/Can-Am, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Husqvarna, Hyosung, Indian, Kawasaki, KTM, Royal Enfield, Suzuki, Triumph, Victory, Yamaha/Star and Zero. BMW has brought out its new R nineT roadster, but unfortunately the company’s S1000R, the naked version of its S1000RR Superbike, was not available to show this weekend. Ducati is making the North American public debut of the new Monster 1200 this weekend at Long Beach and also has the new Panigale 899 available for fans to check out. Sadly, Ducati could not bring one of its ultra-exotic Panigale 1199 Superleggeras to the show. Honda has several new offerings on display, including the new Valkyrie, the CTX1300, the popular Grom, a Pioneer side-by-side vehicle with an innovative seating arrangement, and a customized CBR1000RR that will be raffled off to benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Honda will not be displaying a CBR1000RR SP at Long Beach, however, because none of the limited-production bikes are available yet. Kawasaki has its aggressively-styled Z1000 on the floor along with its sibling, the new Ninja 1000 ABS, the 310-horsepower Jet Ski Ultra 310LX and a Teryx side-by-side utility vehicle, which now comes with a standard three-year warranty. KTM is using the show in Long Beach to make the North American debut of its new Super Duke 1290R naked sportbike. The machine is powered by a 1301cc, 75-degree V-Twin engine that produces a claimed 180 bhp and comes with ride-by-wire throttle, traction control, ABS and more. Suzuki is showing off its key new model, the V-Strom 1000 ABS; its cool new entry-level bike, the GW250; and a 50th Anniversary Suzuki GSX-R1000 SE, even though all 50 units slated to come to America have already been sold. Triumph is highlighting some of its new cruiser and touring models, but the company is also displaying several special machines, the AMA Pro Daytona SportBike Daytona 675R of Elena Myers, the turbo-charged Daytona 675R ridden by stunter Nick “Apex” Brocha in several online videos, and a dual-engine land speed record bike. Yamaha’s new FZ-09 with its crossplane crankshaft-equipped three-cylinder engine is on display in its floor space, not far from one of Jorge Lorenzo’s YZR-M1 MotoGP racebikes, the AMA Pro Superbike Championship-winning YZF-R1 of Josh Herrin and the AMA Pro Daytona SportBike-winning YZF-R6 of Cameron Beaubier. Herrin and Beaubier will be signing autographs during the weekend. Zero is showing off its newest electric streetbike, the Zero SR, which is claimed to produce 106 lbs.-ft. of torque and go 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds. Zero also proudly announced that several of its models can be fitted or retrofitted with a new Power Tank option that will extend the range of some models up to 171 miles in the city or 88 miles at highway speeds and that the prices of the 2014 Zero S and DS models have been reduced by $1000 compared with 2013 pricing. In addition to Beaubier and Herrin, AMA Pro racers Chris Ulrich and Jake Zemke will be signing autographs, as will former FIM Endurance World Champion Jason Pridmore, 1993 Superbike World Champion Scott Russell and reigning UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz. And if that weren’t enough, there are several contests that fans can enter to win free motorcycles and watercraft, dozens of entries in the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Competition are on display throughout the show space, and several manufacturers are offering demo rides outside the convention center to licensed riders, weather permitting. The Progressive International Motorcycle show runs through Sunday. For more information, go to www.motorcycleshows.com or call (800) 331-5706.
